Week In Review

My apologies for the lack of entries over the last 2 weeks. But, I’m back. The summer has flown by. I have had plenty of opportunity to go away but the timing has been all wrong. So I’ve roamed the city and headed out to the Hamptons a few times. So what’s been going on? Well a little bit of everything. Where do I start?

Fashion Week is fast approaching and everyone’s starting to come back so we’re opening Upstairs at Cipriani early. The date is this Thursday, August 28th, play throughout the weekend with Karaoke this Sunday and get crazy all of next week. I’ve been going to everyone else’s places but they seem to just be a stop on the way home. I don’t know why but it's true. BIASED BUT TRUE…

War/ Nightlife Craziness/ The Olympics - Incredible!

Politics

I have to start with politics. I woke up a couple days ago and repeated my same routine, turn on the computer then the TV. Tune to the news, head to the kitchen to fill the tea pot, pausing to decide between tea and coffee (coffee), then back to the computer. What the hell do I read on Yahoo? Russia invades Georgia??? It was like reading something from the Cold War Era.

I squinted, frowned and thought maybe the heading had something to do with the Olympics. How is it possible that after seeing the grievous errors in approach, mentality and miscalculation of world opinion that the Bush administration made in the lead up and prosecution of the “Iraq War”, could the Russian government attack and invade Georgia?

Michael Phelps Gets Super Dissed

Michael Phelps has received almost as much flack for his bong-smoking photo as Chris Brown has for his woman-beating (proving once again how ridiculous our justice system is. Minimum sentences for drug possession vs. rape anyone?). After those photos surfaced, Phelps was dropped by Kellogg’s as the face of their cereal and just to drive the point home, Kellogg’s dropped off 2 tons of boxes with Phelps’ picture on them at the San Francisco Food Bank.

A spokeswoman for the food bank told the press: “We do regularly see products with packages that are no longer desirable. Though Kellogg’s and their star spokesman hit a patch of rough water, San Francisco’s hungry just got thrown a life preserver.” How long do you think she’s been waiting to use those puns?

Phelps Suspended from USA Swimming

In the latest development in the Michael Phelps pot-smoking “scandal,” Phelps has been suspended from competition for three months by the USA Swimming Organization. Although Phelps didn’t violate any anti-doping rules, USA Swimming made the move in order to, “send a strong message to Michael because he disappointed so many people, particularly the hundreds of thousands of USA Swimming member kids who look up to him as a role model and a hero.”

Apparently, Phelps also disappointed sponsor Kellogg Co., who announced early Thursday that they will not be renewing Phelps’ contract, as this type of behavior is not consistent with the company’s image. One can only hope that Tony the Tiger can keep his heroin habit a secret. What would the kids think?

Phalps Hits The Bong

Swimmer Michael Phelps was caught smoking pot over the weekend by a UK paper. News of the World printed a photograph of the 23 year old Olympic Gold Medalist taking a hit from a bong. In a statement released by Phelps he apologized, “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment.” He also went on to say that it would never happen again.

The Olympic committee also issued a statement, “Michael has acknowledged that he made a mistake and apologized for his actions. We are confident that, going forward, Michael will consistently set the type of example we all expect from a great Olympic champion.”
