EMM Group & Tenjune Celebrate 5 Ravishing Years

When it comes to NYC nightlife, 5 years is a long time. In the fickle nightlife industry of New York City, EMM manages to stay on top with some of the best venues in town. In celebration of that great feat, Eugene Remm and Mark Birnbaum threw a grand bash last Friday night to ring in Tenjune's 5th anniversary.

Celebrity guests included Carmelo Anthony, Dwayne Wade, Ray Allen, Paul Pierce, Maxwell, and Lebron James just to name a few. DJ Runna and Swizz Beatz brought the beats while guests danced all night and morning (literally) thanks to Liquid Lightning energy drinks.

Joonbug Exclusive - The Knocks

Joonbug recently had the chance to catch up with electronica duo and NYC locals, Benjamin “B-Roc” Ruttner and James “JPatt” Patterson, of The Knocks.

Not only are these guys rising stars here in the U.S., but they are blowing up on the international scene as well. After wrapping up the last stop on their Corona Light Tour at Tenjune last week, prompted by their Corona Light television ad, B-Roc and JPatt have brought their talents to Europe once again. Currently, The Knocks are on a massive festival-circuit that spans the continent of Europe. The electronica duo is being featured alongside of some of the biggest names in the industry, Calvin Harris, Busy P, SBTRKT and Boys Noize to name a few. Not bad for a couple of guys who started off by scrapping together just enough money to make their NYC-based studio, HeavyRoc Music, a few years ago.

The Knocks have an uncanny ability to consistently produce great music that has an enormous range. Back in 2008, Diplo recognized their talents and featured one of their remixes on the Paper Route Gangstaz’ “Fear & Loathing in Hunts Vegas” mixtape. Still, the scope of The Knocks extends beyond hip-hop and into club-bangers like their Peter Bjorn & John remix of “It Don’t Move Me.” More recently, The Knocks have breathed new life into Motown classics on their Same Old Songs free EP. Make sure to check out their stand-out cover of The Temptations' “Aint To Proud To Beg".

Over the course of their still young career, The Knocks have progressed from making mostly mash-ups and remixes to producing their own amazing tracks. Check out “Something I Can Dance To,” their funny and painfully relevant song “Blackout,” and “When You’ve Got Music” which was recently sampled by Chiddy Bang's song, “When you’ve Got Music.”

The Frontier Wasteland: Provocateur

I haven't had an opportunity to walk around the Meatpacking District since I left my post here at Joonbug several months ago. So, last weekend's warmth and signs of spring got me out of my apartment and downtown to check out how some of my favorite nightclubs were doing. As I was walking down 9th Avenue, I thought it would be fun to see who was where and if the scene had changed at all in the past few months. It was good to hear the bass pumping at Tenjune and a flow of beautiful women walking out of Cielo. Around the corner was a whole different story though. Expecting to see the B(and C)-list wannabes drooling to get into the notoriously exclusive Provocateur, I ended up being the one with my mouth hung open when I passed the purple-lit door.

EMM Group To Bring SL To Lily Pond This Summer

Mark Birnbaum and Eugene Remm, the geniuses behind Tenjune, SL, and Abe and Arthurs, are bringing the party to the Hamptons for summer 2011. Along with Michael Hirtenstein and Top Chef's winner Hung Hyun, this new EMM Group club/restaurant is sure to be the hotspot in Montauk. The team tested the Lily waters a few Saturdays this past summer but now they've taken the plunge into ownership. The new venue has yet to be named, but there's no doubt that a slew of models, celebs, and all of the pretty people will be in attendance. Known for its indoor/outdoor design with massive VIP-lounge and patio terrace featuring bed-style cabanas, Lily Pond is already buzzed from a successfully star studded season this past summer, and it will only get bigger from here.

New York and D.C. Are Just the Beginning: DJ George Garcia

Beneath the curved brim of DJ George Garcia's beige hat and above his modestly low-cut t-shirt and half-zipped coat beams something that you can see plain as day from the dance floor of any club as you peer towards the DJ booth, or even in a low-key conversation here in the Joonbug offices: A smile. "You’ll never not see a smile on my face," he boasts. "That’s how I was raised."

Coming from a boisterous Spanish family and background, Garcia has always been involved in parties and family gatherings, and, frankly, always around a crowd of people. "I plug in my music and my dad jumps up and starts dancing and grabbing people out of the crowd," he explained about a family gathering, which usually turns "from dinners to parties" fairly quickly. His upbringing, too, led him to experience all types of music, from Spanish to Greek to heavily drum-influenced tunes, which, in turn, allowed him to pick up the snare drum in the high school band.

It's Your Fault. No, It's Your Fault!

Perhaps this past week in nightlife has given us yet another clue as to what our industry does when something goes terribly wrong. I reported earlier in the week on the death of 17 year old Nicole Johns, daughter of an American ambassador, child socialite. As the trail leading up to her death from the 25th floor of a skyscraper in Herald Square led us through her footsteps back to the velvet rope at Tenjune, the city and the blogging world began to buzz about who let her in, who let her drink, who gave her her fake, and who, just who in the world could get this child so drunk in New York City.

Tenjune Eyed in DA Probe

Manhattan's District Attorney began its probe Sunday into the timeline leading up to the death of the U.S. Ambassador to Thailand's daughter Nicole John. John was pronounced dead on Friday night after a fall from a 25th floor window in a high-rise apartment in Herald Square. John, 17, spent her last night alive at one of New York's hottest and most exclusive nightclubs, Tenjune, before leaving the Meatpacking District with a group of friends and returning to the Midtown apartment.
