THE STROKES
While New York Rivals just formed this summer, they boast a refined, refreshing style that seems to be backed by years of experience writing songs and touring the country. It's no coincidence. With former members of Great Big Planes and Armor for Sleep, this Brooklyn four-piece consists of tri-state area veterans coming together to create something special. While the vocals of Josh Moran have a lazy indie swagger similar to singers like The Strokes' Julian Casablanca, the band boast a hard-rocking sense of musicality more in line with bands like Muse and the Deftones. Having just released their new album on iTunes this week, and with a tour with indie legends The Lemonheads under their belt, New York Rivals are already working like professionals in their 2 months as a band. We spoke to guitarist Erik Rudic (pictured far right) about the band's formation, recording their self-titled full-length, and what the future has in store.
Been really looking forward to seeing a festival line up all year? The last one was amazing, its competitors were amazing, now you just really need to see the line-up. You hear the hype, you hear it until you can’t take it any longer, “Who’s it gunna be, who’s it gunna be” and then… oh the disappointment! It’s the same headliners you ALWAYS see and like bad smells, there is just no getting rid of them. Now, it’s nice to catch one of the good ol’ rock legends that have been going ever since you were residing in your mother’s womb, but let’s face it -when all they play are festivals, release no new music, play no private gigs and generally hog a slot that could showcase another worthy legend, contemporary or not, that’s where the problem lies.

Over 100,000 pairs of dusty feet trampled through the Californian desert this weekend for the twelfth annual Coachella Music and Arts festival at the Empire Polo Field in Indio, CA. The sun shone brightly on the event as the temperatures reached the high nineties, with excited attendees showing their dedication for the frivolities by braving the baking heat over the course of the weekend.
Recently receiving international acclaim from the press, Coachella was host to a vast array of nationalities and personalities. A large proportion of Brits and Aussies flew in, while Hollywood actors Danny DeVito, Lindsay Lohan, Leonardo DiCaprio and Ashley Greene were all caught dancing along at some point. Sightings of Kelly Osbourne, Katy Perry and Paris Hilton were also recorded. R&B star, Rihanna, was in attendance, accompanied by a huge entourage of bodyguards and was quoted saying Arcade Fire "blew my fucking mind" after she saw them headline on the second day of the event.
The basics of being environmentally-conscientious are easy: reduce, reuse, recycle. But if you're looking to do more than the basics, how about listening to chart-topping bands and enjoying delicious farm fresh food?
Head to the Sweetlife Festival in Columbia, Maryland on May 1st, 2011. Hosted by Sweetgreen, DC's go-to organic salad and frozen yogurt restaurant's and the Jamie Oliver Food Foundation, the festival will feature great musical acts, such as The Strokes, Girl Talk, Lupe Fiasco, Ra-Ra Riot, and Cold War Kids and will include delicious food from local organic farmers.The festival's aim is to celebrate music, healthy food, and thoughtful living.
The Strokes have released a video to "Call Me Back" off their new album Angles. The video was created by Albert Hammond Jr, guitarist of The Strokes. The song is one of the more mellow tracks on the new album, and the video pretty much does justice to the song. It's a pretty bleak video. But, check it.
The Strokes will be releasing their new album, Angles, next Tuesday (March 22nd). The highly anticipated album has been in the works for quite sometime, and this is your chance to hear the album before it's even released.

With their new album releasing in just a few weeks (March 22nd, 2011), The Strokes released another track off of their highly anticipated album, Angles.
It really does have a Radiohead type vibe. Casablancas' voice, throughout the song, is very Thom Yorke-like. It's composition is very different than anything the band has done before, but it is still quite catchy with its upbeat tempo.

This past week, The Strokes released "Under Cover Of Darkness," their first single off of their upcoming album Angles.
It doesn't seem like the band lost much of themselves over the five or so years since their last release, which is quite encouraging. The song is still filled with catchy guitar riffs, and that classic Casablancas sound.
In a recent interview, (guitarist) Nick Valensi, in response to a question about if the album will please fans who have been waiting so long, responded:
"I feel like it’s gonna be impossible for us to make music that’ll live up five years of nothing. It’s kind of that Chinese Democracy syndrome. You take that much time off.. no matter what you do it’s not gonna be as good as people want it to be. I feel like no matter what the record is, or how hard we worked on it, or how much we like it, it’s not gonna live up to people’s expectations only because of those five years between the last one and this one. If we had just released this a year or two after the last one, I imagine it would have gone better."
With that being said, Angles is looking to be a pretty great album, which will, probably, please most fans of the garage rock band.
