Bisoux Gets Techy at LaGuardia

LaGuardia's Bisoux Restaurant is getting with the times, and perhaps a little ahead of the times, by amping up their technology.

Chefs Riad Nasr and Lee Hanson bring a new kind of eatery to Terminal D - complete with the most up-to-date gizmos...iPads! 72 iPads were installed, 12 at the bar, and 60 at tables, so that diners can order drinks and dishes more quickly.

They can also use the tablets to check on their flights, log into Facebook, Twitter, or e-mail, play games, or browse the web. Diners can even order news and magazine titles and have the publications delivered right to their seats! If you're heading on vacation this summer, this seems like the best spot around for your pre-flight party.

Um, can every restaurant and airport do this please?

The Naked Apple: Paradise in Boracay

So, I've been MIA for the past few weeks, and I'm sure you all missed me. As I mentioned in my last post, I was on vacation in Asia for the past few weeks. I went to a small tropical island off the coast of the Philippines called Boracay. Getting there is def a journey because there are no direct flights, it was a 2 day journey for me. I flew from JFK to Hong Kong, then flew to Manila; spent a night in Manila (there is nothing to report about Manila, it's a poor, dirty city that's pride and joy is Manny Pacquiao and the Mall of Asia, which has the only IMAX in the country so that kind of gives you an idea of what kind of place it is. Def not a place to spend more than a night or two in). Then I flew into Caticlan, and took a small boat to the island of Boracay. Of course it was down pouring when I got there and, in fact, my flight from the day before was canceled due to the tropical storm. My first day wasn't very nice weather wise, but I wasn't going to let it ruin my day.

A Glowing Igloo Village

Most of what we know about the igloo is its iconic shape and what we’ve learned from childhood cartoons. However, there’s something magical about the igloo. It’s a paradox--a home made of ice designed to keep its dwellers warm. Hotel Kakslauttanen in Finland not only celebrates the igloo, but has created its own igloo village for visitors to stay in. Many come to see the northern lights and enjoy a beautiful relaxing stay.

This only makes the beautiful glass-ceiling igloos even more intriguing. Yes, the igloo village is also home to igloos with beautifully crafted glass tops. Those inside remain toasty and warm and enjoy a breathtaking view of the sky. Those outside are treated to the warm glow of the rows and rows of glowing little homes. From afar, the the igloos look like rows of fireflies. It’s not just the northern lights that said igloo dwellers enjoy. The Hotel Kakslauttanen is located in one of the few places left where stars are visible in excellent condition. Every night is a beautiful sight for those who can afford a vacation away.

Dubois Farms

It is the first day of Fall and already we’re craving apples. Not those store bought, Gristedes-esque apples, but the freshly picked treasures that are plucked by your own hands. Although we just missed peach season, there is still plenty of fruit, ripe for the picking. You have a choice of plums, tomatoes, apples, pears and pumpkins. How does it work, you ask? Easy, you get a bag and pick to your heart’s content, then your pickins’ are weighed (charge is per pound so be sure to get what you need- although we know how enticing it is to fill as many apple bags as possible.) That’s not all there is to do at Dubois Farms. If you’re with your sweetie, kiss in the dead end corners of their corn maze, check out the wagon ride around their expansive farm, or visit the bakery for delicious homemade treats (we’re talking fresh from the oven) like pumpkin pie, apple pie and preserves. For the kids, bring them to “Tiny Town,” a miniature, brightly colored, village, delight them with pony rides and a visit to the farm animals. With tons to do plus a barbeque each weekend until the end of the season (November), you’re bound to love this family friendly farm. For more information, go to http://www.duboisfarms.com/
