Video: Yacht

Yacht have released the first two videos from their fifth album (sophomore with DFA), Shangri-La. The seven minute companion pieces of “Utopia” and “Dystopia (The Earth Is On Fire)”, is more like a short film rather than a music video. Part one is a vision of an expansive and geometrically captivating universe with mountains, water, and plenty of space to dance – sort of Tron meets Lord of the Rings. Superstudio was the group that created this alternate state, the "geodesic grid"; their take on utopia wasn’t of an idealistic world where everyone is equal, but rather, according to the Yacht website, “it was a world without buildings, a life without objects. [Superstudio] dreamed of nomadic communities living the warm and human aspects of life on a vast, impersonal grid.”

Northside Festival Swallows Brooklyn

Last weekend was a musical hurricane of electric rain, bass wind and drumquakes. L Magazine presented their third installment of the now-annual Northside Festival, in the neighboring neighborhoods of Williamsburg and Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The four jam-packed days of music, art, film and expression were met with gracious and rather excitable masses of hipsters, punkers, and everyone between, creating a chasm of sound and visual therapy that will be lived through until next years festival.

YACHT - Not Your Dad's Boat Rock

In 2003 a tech geek from Oregon began making electronic music under a very misleading name. Honoring an alternative high school, rather than a boat, YACHT’s debut was a somber albeit kinetic collection of ambience suitable for a reflective night in bed. However, a continuous mutation over the last eight years and the addition of four musicians has landed this rapidly growing group (in popularity as well as size) in an entirely different location than its origin. Their latest album Shangri-La, released June 21st, is a collection of socially aware dance tracks made of equal parts contemplative lyrics and loose-yourself beats. A savage reflection on our society’s current state, this album draws parallels between old world id and future cultural regression.

Maritime Parc

Liberty State Park in Jersey City now has a something to offer those of us without houseboats and yachts. Executive Chef and owner, Chris Siverson, has graced us all with a new seafood-centric restaurant and event space called Maritime Parc. The building was originally intended as an office space but thankfully Chef Siverson saw more promise than did its designers.

Now, with the help of Stephanie Goto, the building has been turned into a modern space with a svelte design. It has a unique yurt type feel inside with an easy balance of exposed wood and soft fabrics. Each of the three floors has a terrace showing off the Manhattan/Jersey skyline.
