When you walk into Pitango, you will be greeted by a sleek interior with blown glass light fixtures, and a glass counter that encases 20 metal containers, all brimming with some truly tasty gelatos and sorbets. Despite the modernity of the decor, the posters that adorn the wall ensures that Pitango promises authentic gelato, without all the modern -day additives.
Pitango uses organic milk, sugar, fruits, and nuts in their gelatos and sorbets, and no artificial flavoring or color. The base for each gelato and sorbet comes from their farm in Pennsylvania and is then delivered to each of their five locations in the DC Metropolitan area. Each location churns the gelato and sorbet fresh in the store before placing it in separate canisters to be kept at the perfect temperature of 14 degrees Fahrenheit. Before serving to the customer, the Pitango server whips and molds the gelato or sorbet to ensure a creamy and smooth texture.
In the first bite you take, you'll find what sets Pitango apart from other gelaterias. With less than 9% butterfat, as compared to the 25% you can find in most ice creams, this gelato is one of the healthiest you can find and Pitango's use of fresh ingredients is essential to it's taste. Without too much added sugar and fat, the pistachio gelato actually tastes just like pistachio and the raspberry sorbet tastes just like raspberry. What a find!
In addition to the delectable frozen treats, Pitango also offers their customers free WiFi. Unfortunately the wood and plastic chairs do not make for the most comfortable seating to spend a few hours of the day, but it is nice to be able to check your email while enjoying the traditional Italian treats.
At $4.50 for a small (up to two flavors) or $6.60 for a large (up to three flavors), it may not be the most cost -efficient frozen treat, but with one spoonful, you'll agree that it's worth every penny.
