11TH DIMENSION
Nearing the end of his first tour sans The Strokes in support of his debut solo album "Phrazes for the Young," Julian Casablancas held his own at Philly's Trocadero on Sunday night. Filling the entire place practically up to the rafters, Casablancas managed to deliver an entertaining show and really illustrate first-hand how amazing his new album is.
After a high-energy set from Brooklyn-based electro duo Tanlines, and what seemed like an abnormally long wait, Casablancas' backing band took the stage close to 10 pm. With a set-up of two of each instrument on stage, and some musicians even doing double duty on additional instruments, the band began playing the first song, "Ludlow St," as soon as they hit the stage. As if for an extra dramatic entrance, Casablancas then took the stage to deafening cheers from the crowd. However, while the enthusiastic crowd was clearly excited to be there, Casablancas' initial feelings on the matter seemed debatable.
If you missed the chance to see Julian Casablancas on tour following the release of his first solo album Phrazes for the Young, the critically acclaimed singer-songwriter will be returning to the U.S. for several select gigs along the East Coast. The world has been raving over the success of Casablancas’ solo project, while fans of his fronted rock band The Strokes await the delayed release of their latest studio album. While fellow Strokes band members debate over the official completion of the album, Casablancas has made his mark as a formidable performer in a realm where one’s former success is weighed directly upon their current status.
Remember him? Well, last time you’ve heard of him it may’ve been with four other band members. Or maybe you last heard him alongside Pharrell Williams & Santogold doing the tribute song “My Drive Thru,” to commemorate the centennial of the ubiquitous Converse Chuck Taylor sneaker. Nowadays, he has “Music comin’ out of my hands & feet & kisses,” as he sings in his new song “11th dimension.” Julian Casablancas, better known as the frontman for internationally lauded rock band The Strokes, has been busy ahead of his solo album titled Phrazes of the Young. It’s the latest solo venture from a band that has seen either full LP releases or outside collaborations from each member of the quintet since their 2006 album First Impressions of Earth.
