Nostalgic Halloween Costumes

Let’s face it, Halloween is the best holiday to grow into. Getting Halloween treats as a child doesn’t become a hunt for stocking stuffers and last minute gifts for the office as we age, like Christmas. Halloween costumes, unlike Christmas sweaters, age really well. Batman at the age of 5 is still as cool as Batman at the age of 30 for one blessed day. Sure, the candy treats may evolve into holiday alcohol, but for many people that’s a plus.

However, there is nothing quite the same as our first Halloween costume. The thrill of being your favorite hero or something scary for the first time is something that simply can’t be matched. Even our most embarrassing costumes can have a touch of sentimental value. Maybe we weren’t the best Ninja Turtles or Supergirls, but for one solid day it was perfect. The candy rewards only sweetened the pot. For those who want a touch of that feeling back, there’s I’m Remembering. The site known for collecting so many nostalgia items from the 80s and 90s began accepting submissions of childhood Halloween costumes today.

Nadine Loren Naked in the 80's

Usually standing next to a speaker at a concert means partial deafness, a marginal headache and on some occasions, a period of unrecalled events due to a blackout. Standing next to the speakers at the album release party for Nadine Loren meant something entirely different. Instead of the rhythmic bass thumping and eardrum piercing major notes on an electric guitar, I was greeted with melodic conga drums, bass solos and interlacing piano chords.

Generally known for her opera trained vocals, well traveled background, and genuinely unique covers, Nadine Loren combines all of these exquisite characteristics into an elegant package she calls Naked 80’s. Naked 80’s is Nadine’s follow up album to, Living in Wonderland. In this sophomore album, Nadine strips down (song wise, for you wise guys), each of her favorite 80’s songs. Nadine and her infamous producer Peter Asher, take apart layer after layer of synthesized drum machines, keyboards, guitar work and 12-bit sound bites to deliver a more organic and uniquely rich experience of our favorite 80’s songs.

CFCF - It was Never Meant to be (Games Remix)

The Montreal based DJ, CFCF, is one of my favorites. So, when some Brooklyn hipsters spice up one of his tracks to the point of badassery, I've got to take note. The video is a nice touch, too. I would have watched it a few hundred times, but I'm easily distracted.

This version of 'It Was Never Meant to Be' is more upbeat than what's found on Panesian Nights, and it brings you back to this surreal era that never really existed. It has a lot of 80's qualities but is too complex and emotional of a piece to have been completed during an era known for it's over production. This song only works against the backdrop of this video because we know it doesn't. There's no way that this informercial for the Vector had the right soundtrack. I guarantee it was a lot more 8-bit.

Pac-Man

According to Deadline Hollywood, Merv Griffin Entertainment has teamed up with Namco Bandai Games America to bring us a Pac-Man "reality show" similar to Wipeout on ABC.

"The idea we have is to take what Pac-Man is and bring it to life, to bring what is essentially the world's biggest game of tag to television", Merv Griffin's Roy Bank told a representative from Deadline. It seems as though there is going to be a lot of silly running around and crashing into objects while wearing Blinky, Pinky, Inky and Clyde costumes. One can expect a lot of falls, a lot of ridiculous mazes, and a lot of the yellow hero’s trademark game sounds. What’s really going to be a surprise is how the game will make use of the pellets and fruity power-ups.

Rubix Kube Will Take You Back To The 80s

Yello, Rubix Kube! I know that you probably already know about them and have seen them over 5 times at The Canal Room on Saturday Nights, but the 80’s cover band is Crackalackin’ bigger than Star Wars. If you haven’t checked them out and have any love for Debbie Gibson or Eddie Money then clear your Saturdays. The covers are so perfect there is no reason to bootleg this on your walkman, and you’ll only find a more entertaining show if you get your Delorean up to 88 mph (not the recommended driving speed on West Broadway).

Gary Spencer: The (Video) Diary Gets Durty With Christian Alexander!

Hey Joonbuggers!

Lots to tell you about my past week out and about in the City, not least my candid chat with old friend Christian Alexander when he and I met up at the beautiful, relatively new, Trump SoHo down on Spring Street, but much more of that later.

A little bit chilly it may be, but that didn't stop myself and many others showing up at the new Hotel Gansevoort on Park Avenue to check out that small budget film about that fledgling website Facebook. Yep, I’m sure that site will do well eventually once a few more people find out about it, but until it catches on they have released a film all about how it came together, now unless you have been living on a remote island somewhere, of course you already know all about this, and the premier party held last Wednesday by the Cinema Society was well attended with the likes of Justin Timberlake and Helena Christensen.

FREQUENCY Megadeth
Megadeath and Slayer rock the Tsongas Arena.

This summer has seen a sharp decline in attendance to live concerts. Live Nation has been cancelling shows, bands have been performing in smaller venues, and tours are being cut short.

In these end times of live performances, an underdog genre of music is surging once again in popularity. In the dawn of the 1990’s, grunge bands from the Pacific Northwest had eclipsed hair bands in popularity. Most fans back then said “good riddance,” but judging by the success of the Slayer/Megadeath tour this summer, people are now saying “welcome back.”
