With spring attempting to rear it's fashionable head, Joonbug decided to chat with Alli Webb creator of the much loved Drybar. The concept of this blow-out specialty oasis began on the West Coast in California and made its way to NYC for time-conscious and money-savvy fashionistas to enjoy! With 28 locations across the United States and five of those locations in Manhattan (Flatiron, Midtown, Murray Hill, Upper East Side, Tribeca) all offering blowouts for $40—it's easy to see why Drybar is such a sensation! We were very inspired by our interview with Alli who is a dynamic professional who took her beauty concept to the next level. We also were happy to hear about Drybar's new haircare line! Here's what Alli had to share with us.
What is the concept behind Drybar? Love the name.
I wanted to create something that didn't exist at the time. I, myself, have wavy hair and I know what it's like when you need a good blow-out! I also wanted to create a fun experience where people could relax and enjoy their time at a salon. I began my first Drybar in Los Angeles and the concept took off! Drybar is also a service that's accessible to many, because I wanted my clients to receive a high-quality blow-out at a great price.
Describe your background in the beauty industry.
I'm a hair stylist, with years of hands-on experience. Drybar actually began as a mobile location and from there with a business partner (my brother) we were able to turn it into a physical location(s). I like working with people and making them look their best.
What's the signature blowout at Drybar?
The signature Drybar experience starts with a relaxing scalp massage followed by a wonderful shampoo and conditioner. There's actually a menu booklet with different styles of blowouts to try. Some of the most popular are the Mai Tai (beachy, sexy waves), Straight Up (straight with a little bit of body) and the Cosmo (lots of sexy curls), of course!
What are some of the best shampoos and conditioners that you recommend to the women of NYC?
It's interesting that you ask—Drybar is launching their own haircare line exclusively at Sephora and Drybar locations this month along with brushes, professional dryer, and styling tools that will make your life a whole lot easier, once you leave the salon. The emphasis is on shampoos, conditioners, and finishing products that really make a difference. (Some of the new products are; Happy Hour Blowout Shampoo, Happy Hour Weightless Conditioner, Hot Toddy Heat Protector and Frizz Fighter, Cream Soda Smoothing Cream, and The Chaser—Shine Pomade).
You're a businesswoman with a thriving business in a challenging economy. What tidbit of advice can you give other business owners in the fashion and beauty industries and those looking to make it?
Put in the effort. Have a concept that is fresh and a new take on a concept—be creative. Try to surround yourself with a good business partner. Most of all, have confidence!
Whether it’s her troubled relationship with Chris Brown, her latest tattoo, or her never ending stream of artsy selfies on Instagram, there is no denying Rihanna’s global presence. With the launch of her fashion line with British clothing company, River Island, you can even dress like Rihanna. To complete your Rihanna-inspired style, you’ll soon to able to purchase her cosmetics line with MAC, set to drop throughout 2013.
The Yardley London Skin Indulgence Bath & Shower Collection, which launched in the Spring of 2012, is a great addition to the Yardley brand. Not only are their products extremely affordable, but they have made me kick my oh-so-trusty Dove products to the curb. For those who prefer soap to body wash, the Body Butter Mango Cream Cleansing Bar is a must-have in the shower. The bar contains pure mango, avocado, and olive butter and deeply moisturizes the skin. Looking for even smoother skin? Try their Scrub & Smooth Sea Minerals Bath Bar, which exfoliates to smooth the skin as it firms and tones. The bath bars range from $2.49-$2.99 per bar.
National Absinthe Day falls on March 5th this year and apart from obviously drinking in its honor, it's important to look and feel great for the occasion. Don green if you're feeling spirited and make sure to prep and pamper in green fairy fashion. Spritz on some eau de absinthe, make sure your breath is ready to take on the night, moisturize those hands that'll be all over cocktails all day long and make sure they look fab while you're sipping.
Absinthe Mints: If you aren't quite in for the adventure that is absinthe, try these absinthe mints. Completely harmless, but with an absinthe taste. Bonus - it leaves you with fresh breath to take on the night! ($4.95)

Katie Gagnon, owner of Blow by Blow, Chicago's newest blowdry salon, is always perfectly coiffed. "It's definitely the best perk," she says of her job. Gagnon owns the blowdry bar with her mother, and the intimate space on Oak Street is perfect for decompressing and freshening up after a long day of shopping or to get ready for a night on the town. All blowdrys are $35 and you can get anything from soft curls (the most popular style) to beachy waves or a sleek and straight blowout. Updos and trendy braids are available too.
The salon just started offering Sunday brunch specials, where you can get blowdrys done with your girlfriends while sipping mimosas, enjoying classic chick flicks and munching on pastries and mini bagels from Goddess and Grocer down the street.

Street Saint's beauty-on-the-go kit has you covered for a fresh, natural makeup look this spring. Seven brushes and a palette of wearable colors for a variety of skintones are all included in a stylish crocodile clutch. This has become my go-to travel makeup. I know I have everything from powder and eyeshadow to blush and lipcolor in one place and I don't need to scramble for loose cosmetics. For frequent travelers trying to minimize packing, this kit is a no-brainer. Plus, the powders contain vitamins A, C and E as well as Kalparaiane, a new anti-aging marine extract from brown algae. So your makeup will moisturize and re-plump skin with antioxidants while giving you a breezy spring glow.
Few things are less attractive and off-putting than seeing cakey, flakey makeup crumbling off a woman's face, or seeing the stark contrast between the color of a woman's neck and the heavy foundation on her face. Luckily, IMAN Cosmetics recently released a BB Creme for women with skin tones in a myriad of shades. This luxurious "Beauty Balm" (don't worry, we didn't know what "BB" meant either) acts like moisturizer, with ingredients like almond, aloe and Vitamins A, C and E, while evening out skin discoloration and protecting your skin with SPF 15. This is a must-have product for everyday use to continuously improve your complexion. It goes on smoothly and lightly, so your perfectly airbrushed look appears completely natural. No one needs to know your secret! BB Creme also acts as a great base. If you choose to put makeup over BB Creme, we recommend trying their Bronzer for when you want a flawlessly even, sunkissed shimmer.
