For a super-sized cupcake on the side of your panini, stop by Il Bambino for lunch. Appearing at first as simply a bakery, one must look past the muffins, brownies, and bundt cakes to find a panini paradise. The soup and sandwich menu is extensive, so find what combo sounds most filling to you, and order something sweet on the side. Our favorite is the baked potato and leek soup, which is served with a plentiful piece of garlicky pesto bread, perfect for dipping and a steal at only $5 to fill-up. At night, Il Bambino changes into a BYOB, candlelit eatery- thus keeping the ambience high and the price low.
During the summer months, there is nothing like escaping the heat of the Manhattan streets. Enter the Bohemian Hall & Beer Garden in Astoria Queens; the last original Beer Garden in all of NYC. Only a twenty-minute subway ride into Queens, it has the ability to make any New Yorker feel like they have travelled halfway across the globe and ended up in beer and brat heaven. A Czech and Slavic run joint; the Hall is overseen by the Bohemian Citizens Benevolent Society who bind together to preserve this historic venue. The old-fashioned feel of the hall and the diverse neighborhood of Astoria transplant you into old world Eastern Europe.
Urgent message for all of our readers in Astoria: Clear your culinary calendar for Saturday, the 30th of May. We know it’s a little far in advance, but to celebrate their 50th anniversary, the longstanding pizzeria Rizzo’s is offering a special that’s worth mentioning now; Sicilian slices for fifty cents! That’s two Sicilian slices for a dollar. (Unfortunately, they are limiting it to two slices a customer, so don’t plan on camping out there all day).
In the month and a half or so proceeding that highly-anticipated day, there will be many other decent 50-cent specials, but none quite so enticing as the May 30th grand finale. For example, staring this Saturday, April 11 to April 24, you can get either four garlic knots or a small salad for fifty cents. Than, from Saturday May 9 to May 29 the restaurant will be serving up gelatis, Italian ices, and canolis for just 50 cents. It seems the underlying theme is that since they’ve been around for 50 years, the specials cost 50 cents.
