BAND OF OUTSIDERS
Heeled Boots
For those of you unfamiliar with the genius of Rick Owens, allow us to introduce you. This American born but Paris based designer is worshiped by the fashion elite for his innovative, edgy, slightly Goth aesthetic. For Spring 2012, Rick introduced his 100mm Mohawk Wedge Boot for men, his first heeled boot for men. (For those of you too lazy to Google it, 100mm translate to just under 4 inches.) Although visionary, Rick Owens was not the first to introduce the heeled boot trend. Jeffrey Campbell, the beloved footwear brand, had its Areas men’s boot with its 2.5-inch heel. Other designers who have embraced the heeled boot trend are Gareth Pugh and Alain Quilici.
Paris is high fashion, New York is big market, and Milan is skilled craftsmanship - but for a long time Los Angeles Fashion Week has struggled to find its identity. In the past, having no set venue or sponsors, have left many respected designers hesitant to even show their collections in this city. There are plenty of clothing manufacturers in L.A., so what can this "one-industry" city provide the fashion world with that's fresh, different and necessary? With avant garde designers such as Rodarte and Band of Outsiders calling L.A. their hometown, and a new venue produced by Bubble Fish Media at the Vibiana downtown, it seems as if after years of questions, Los Angeles Fashion Week may have finally started to find some answers.
Thursday, a selection of Brooklyn's best and most prominent figures were invited to enjoy the premiere of High Style at the Brooklyn Museum. Participants, including Diane Von Furstenberg, Chloe Sevigny, 3.1 Phillip Lim, and Band of Outsiders, set the tone for the exhibit, which was followed by a cocktail hour, dinner and after party, a glorious bar, and a twenty foot Andy Warhol pinata filled with Hostess snacks. Lim's booth was lead by a foursome of drag queens giving out life advice and leather bowties to anyone who dared to approach.
It may not have been a fair statement for Band Of Outsiders, Scott Sternberg to say he'd rather not live in New York and be influenced by the same things the fashion goers are influenced by. His reasoning is that in doing so he'd lose the edge that his LA location provides.
Although we were sad to see Charles Hamilton leave the music scene, his return and release of his latest creation Normalcy more then made up for it. And now, alongside with Josh Madden spinning the records, the tag team will tear up the opening night at our Fashion Week Gala event at Capitale. Renowned DJ Josh Madden is the perfect complimentary sidekick to match the energy of Sonic The Hamilton. Not only is DJ Josh Madden touring the U.S., he is also a stylist and co-founder of the clothing label DCMA Collective. Talk about the interwining of music and fashion! We were able to get some answers as to what make these two tick.

Milk studios will be partnering up with make-up giants M•A•C Cosmetics, to host their own set of fashion shows. According to the press release, M.A.C and Milk “will offer designers multilayered support; including space for their shows, presentations and press appointments. A designer will also have the option to hold castings, hair and makeup tests as well as look book shoots at The Milk Building (450 West 15th Street) throughout the duration of Fashion Week”.
