Talking Aboot Reds from Canada

Canada is a developing wine country. Like the United States, Canada started making wine when the settlers came to discover the New World about 200 years ago. For a quarter of a century, Vineland Estates Winery in the Niagara Peninsula has been cultivating wine on their soils, creating products that are slowly entering our market.

Vineland Estates produces over 60,000 cases of wine a year and their product consists of the varietals that survive the cooler climates, such as Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Cabernet Franc.

Stars Release New Video

The Canadian indie-pop quintet, Stars (Soft Revolution), have released a video for their latest single, "Changes". Directed by Jaron Albertin, this journey through Toronto's Elgin and Winter Garden Theatre Centre follows a nude woman running, dancing and exploring herself, physically and soulfully.

Spinner.com reported lead singer Amy Millan saying, "This video is based around the idea of changes that we feel deeply and personally, but which also seem to bear the weight of the world." She continued, "The dancer's changes are strange and otherworldly. We watch as change is forced upon her, and how she learns to live through it, as fate demands."

MSTRKRFT Release Two New Tracks

About two years since their last full album release Fist of God, Canadian duo Al-P (Al Puodziukas) and Jesse F. Keeler of MSTRKRFT have at last given fans something new after releasing two tracks last week.

"Beards Again," with its metal-influenced guitar arpeggios during the first minute and Ratatat-esque electro-rock during the second minute, the beginning sounds a little atypical of MSTRKRFT, until the third minute escalates to a final kick and reverts back to the MSTRKRFT sound.

"Back In the USSA" is definitely the familiar thumping dancefloor beat and staticky electronic characteristics of MSTRKRFT, and also soaked in laser sound effects with beat-dependent tempo fluctuations.

Mariana's Trench Makes New York City Debut

A row of 18-year-old girls lined shoulder to shoulder four feet from the stage at the Bowery Electric on September 23, a low-lit, high-class-college-party-style basement venue with an elevated bar and rugged brick walls as the four members of Canadian pop-punk supergroup Mariana's Trench took the stage, all wearing slim-fitting button-up dress shirts and ties, lead singer Josh Ramsay dropping his guitar strap over the back of his head, the guitar falling to his knees, just below the rips in his jeans, and as he approached the microphone, the blue streaks in his gelled hair glistened in the spotlight of the East Village stage, beginning their first-ever New York City performance.

FIRST COURSE Wonky Dog
Eat Wonky

Introducing the new food truck to the DC area called Eat Wonky. This food was a former mail van done up in as a rainbow ice but don’t be fooled by the 60s theme. This food truck was founded in the vibrant street-food scene and the French fry-cheese-gravy combination stimulated by a recent trip to Canada.

What crazy, delicious concoctions could the Canadians have that we don’t? How about Fresh-cut potatoes fried in peanut oil and topped with Squeaky cheese and gravy. Try the Wacky Dog, an all-beef hot dog topped with Wonky Fries on a fresh baked sub roll. For a little spice, seek the Grilled Cheese with basil and crushed red pepper. Eat Wonky didn't forget about dessert but teamed up with Treet Bakery for some locally baked Whoopie Pies in assorted flavors like Nutella, peanut butter and chocolate mint.

Stars Comes to Terminal 5 September 24

Probably one of the best indie acts to come out of Canada, Stars, fueled by the eloquent tag-team vocals of Torquil Campbell and Amy Milan, is continuing their fall tour at Terminal 5 in Manhattan on September 24 after their June 2010 release of their fifth studio album The Five Ghosts.

"The Five Ghosts is lyrically the darkest thing we've ever done," frontman Campbell said in an interview. "There was a lot of being haunted going on when we were making the record. Chris had a strange experience of being haunted in the hotel room that he was staying in when we got together in Vancouver to write. Chris ended up leaving his hotel room after three days in the middle of the night and never going back because he claimed to be being haunted by this entity who was under his bed. So right from the beginning of making the record, we were sort of freaked out. As the year went on, I lost my dad, and a lot of things kept coming back to us and reminding us of ghosts, you know, that your life is filled with ghosts, ghosts of the past and ghosts of other worlds."

Even though more dates are likely to be added, presale tickets for the previously announced shows are already on sale and are expected to go fast.

Not Your Typical Club Hits

With a new album coming out on November 9, the experimental indie group Animal Collective has teamed up with PETA (People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals) for a separate endeavor. Known as a group of animal loving musicians (as if the name wasn’t enough), the partnership has been organized as a protest to the upcoming Canadian seal-hunting season, which begins six days after their new album is released.

The campaign, which features an ad with the band wearing white shirts adorned with an adorable seal illustration and a short, online video, is a blatant comment on the overly cruel practice of using spiked clubs to bludgeon and remove seals from their natural habitat. The video, which lasts nearly a minute and a half, explains the reasoning for the groups involvement in the campaign and explores band member Geologist’s (a.k.a. Brian Weitz) collegiate experiences studying biology and environmental policy. “We really like animals and seals, especially,” he says.
