Julian Casablancas at the Trocadero

Nearing the end of his first tour sans The Strokes in support of his debut solo album "Phrazes for the Young," Julian Casablancas held his own at Philly's Trocadero on Sunday night. Filling the entire place practically up to the rafters, Casablancas managed to deliver an entertaining show and really illustrate first-hand how amazing his new album is.

After a high-energy set from Brooklyn-based electro duo Tanlines, and what seemed like an abnormally long wait, Casablancas' backing band took the stage close to 10 pm. With a set-up of two of each instrument on stage, and some musicians even doing double duty on additional instruments, the band began playing the first song, "Ludlow St," as soon as they hit the stage. As if for an extra dramatic entrance, Casablancas then took the stage to deafening cheers from the crowd. However, while the enthusiastic crowd was clearly excited to be there, Casablancas' initial feelings on the matter seemed debatable.

Javelin Throws You a Bone

Anybody who has ever flipped aimlessly through the bargain bin at a hole-in-the-wall record store knows that album cover art can be as amazing as the obscurity that accompanies the artist. Whether the music is even worth the 99 cent price tag, the images on the record jacket could be priceless. This was the ever present mindset that occupied Javelin as the released their first self-titled EP earlier this month. The limited run of 500 vinyl disks were sold in bargain record jackets with a hand-screened logo over the cover art making each record an individual work of art unto itself.

Featured Artist Profile: Mayer Hawthorne

“I think Mayer is the only artist in the history of the label that I’ve signed after hearing only two songs. Sometimes, you just know it’s the right thing to do.” -Peanut Butter Wolf

When Mayer Hawthorne was introduced to Stones Throw records label head Peanut Butter Wolf, the veteran hip-hop producer couldn’t understand what this clean-cut, white boy from Ann Arbor, Michigan, was trying to sell him. The demo songs that Hawthorne played for the label head sounded like something from a smoky, noir-erotic film from the late 60s. Wolf recalls, “I asked him if they were old songs that he did re-edits of – I couldn’t believe they were new songs and that he played all the instruments.”

Ashely Olsen on cover of Marie Claire

Ashley Olsen isn’t your typical 23-year-old. She became a child superstar as an infant on Full House, a multi-millionaire by her teens, and a style icon all by the time she went to her first college party. In this month's issue of Marie Claire, Olsen tells the magazine why fashion is so important to her and how you’ve either got style or you don’t.
