CULTS
After a bumpy first run Great Googa Mooga is back for the second installment of the food, drink and music festival. Thought of as an “amusement park” for foodies, guests of the inaugural Mooga were disappointed and frustrated to say the least but event organizer, Superfly (Bonnaroo, Outside Lands), heard the cries of the people and reorganized their event. Instead of just a 2-day event, the 2013 Great Googa Mooga will be three days, May 17th through May 19th at Prospect Park in Brooklyn.
Big news has dropped today in the festival circuit: New York’s Governor’s Ball has officially announced its 2012 line up. For those not familiar with the Ball, it’s a two day fest featuring diverse tunes, a myriad of activities, and all the usual shenanigans that accompany any outdoor music festival. Situated on Randall’s Island—stock prison backdrop included—this fest boasts headliners Beck, Modest Mouse, Chromeo, Ducksauce, and Passion Pit (to name a few). Interspersed throughout the two days, the line-up looks fiendishly delicious, with June 23 & 24 shaping up to be quite the weekend.
Rising indie-pop outfit Foster the People have hit the road in support of their May release, Torches. Armed with a few chart-attacking singles, as well as their like-minded tourmates Cults and Reptar, FTP will stomp their way into Boston's House of Blues on Sept. 29th.
Foster the People burst onto the scene in 2010 with their hit "Pumped Up Kicks," which peaked at No. 3 on the U.S. Billboard charts and hit the top of the Alternative Rock charts. The group released a self-titled EP before Torches and snagged a couple of MTV Video Music Award Nominations for the "Pumped Up Kicks" video, which has over 21 million YouTube hits.
After taking a one-year hiatus, POPPED! Music Festival returns this September as a revamped two-day event. The festival is a unique occasion to Philadelphia, celebrating the city’s rich musical history.
Taking place across three stages, the festival will include live music, a DJ tent, a comedy tent, and a food bazaar. Set to headline on Friday are The Shins and Cage the Elephant, and Pretty Lights and Girl Talk on Saturday. In addition to the headlining bands, the festival will host other epic acts including Rakim, Cults, and Kreayshawn.
In addition to staging an eclectic assortment of music acts, POPPED! also aims to bring awareness to Philadelphia’s green efforts via recycling programs, local fair, partnerships with local business, and the use of public transportation and energy saving.
This year (August 5-7) the most major musical event of the summer, Lollapalooza, will be taking place at Grant Park in Chicago. The headliners include Eminem, Foo Fighters, Cold Play, My Morning Jacket, and Deadmau5. Other epic acts like Cults, Lykke Li, The Cars, Crystal Castles, Damian Marley & Nas, and Arctic Monkeys will also take to the stage.
Last year Cults received massive recognition for their summer anthem “Go Outside,” which spread like wildfire across the blogosphere, faster than the duo (Madeline Follin and Brian Oblivion) could write and record the rest of an album. Their sound is best described as indie-pop with a Motown undertone. Their lively, pop-y hooks and Phil Spector-directed girl-band feel paints the pair as a 1960s, doo-wop, garage rock dancing band, which has proven to be a rather irresistible image. With that being said, it is equally as strange as it is intriguing that the duo’s next project is a rap mixtape. While their debut album showcased their ability to produce varying degrees of sonic textures and rich instrumental layering, it’s all within the realm of indie/girl-pop sounds. On the rapping note, it seems like a bit of a stretch.

1) 'Rave on Buddy Holly': a tribute to the rock ‘n’ roll pioneer, features Holly covers by Paul McCartney, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Cee Lo Green, Fiona Apple, and many more. The album’s A-List artists make up a rather impressive and diverse collection, and all prove to be a remarkable fit for Holly’s timeless tunes.

Summer 2010 brought the world of indie music a soundtrack jam packed with breezy numbers from new comers and old favorites alike. One promising duo released a little number called "Go Outside" (available for free download here). This boppy sing-along raised the hopes of music fans for what was to come next from the breakout artists. But when their memorable name, Cults, left eager listeners using a standard Google search in the 'no matches found' zone, and no follow up track in an earshot, it seemed that the only option was to call it quits. However the change of seasons has shed new light on the mysterious Cults disappearance and today, Tuesday, June 7th, they releaseed a full length album, complete with "Go Outside" and 10 other danceable gems (11 if you pre-ordered).
