Derek Lam's new line for DesigNation hit Kohl's April 5th—two whole days earlier than expected. Lam, a Parson School grad and former apprentice to chic Michael Kors, is a master of elegance and good taste. The price range is affordable: $36-88. It is his first swinwear line, and his second Kohl's collection. The line is inspired by Brazil's Rio de Janeiro and are quite spectacular.

While ready-to-wear often steals the spotlight, we’d be making a big mistake not to give some special attention to the fresh beauty trends that graced the runway last week. With as much presence as the covetable clothing, New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2012 season brought us an assortment of hair and makeup looks that inspire our beauty routines as much as the collections inspired our wardrobes. From voluminous, airy updos to nail art we’ll be taking to the salon, here are the best and brightest beauty highlights from backstage to the catwalk. (Hint: keep those tweezers at bay—bushy eyebrows aren’t going anywhere!)
Inspired by Richard Neutra’s Kaufmann midcentury styled House in Palm Springs, Derek Lam’s S/S 2012 collection was modern, clean and structured. There was plenty of vibrant color, contrast stitching, zipper detailing, scalloped edges, patterns and patchwork. The pieces ranged from blazers to sweater dresses to trenches and had a throwback 60s feel to it. The luxurious fabrics consisted of linen, leather, sweater knits and silk. We especially loved the accessories which included chained handbags, patterned platforms, leather and chain belts and even hard hats with print detail.
This collection has a little something for everyone. Whether you're looking for something simple and structured or something fun and patterned, Derek Lam brings it all together for Spring 2012.

It's hard to remember the days when flared jeans were our everyday staple. Skinny jeans have reigned supreme for the last 10 or so seasons, but as every fashionista knows, for every trend, there's always a counter trend. Enter, wide-leg jeans. They aren't new to the scene; we've seen celebrities rocking them for quite some time, but we've been mulling this trend over in our heads. Worn right, they do wonders to your body proportions, but pair it with the wrong shirt, the wrong shoes, the wrong rise, the wrong belt, and things could get ugly fast. We all remember what happened with Jessica Simpson a few years back, and really if she couldn't pull it off, then how in the name of all things trendy will we ever be able to? Should we just let this trend pass us by? Of course not. We've put together a special guide on how to wear wide-leg jeans that will work for any body shape, starting off with what exactly went wrong with Ms. Simpson's look. We still cringe every time we see the photos, but at least we can learn from her mistakes.
It's no secret that Miami is pretty seasonless, leaving us feeling a little left out on post-labor day fashion trends when all the faux fur and thick knits take over, but of-the-moment beauty always keeps us feeling in the loop. Beauty trends might not be timeless, but they can be worn just about anywhere, and though you may not have noticed, it's time to update your makeup bags (and maybe do a little spring cleaning in there too). To save you the time, we went ahead and made a list of all the new introductions you should make to your bag this season, as well as what you should be parting ways with. There were a lot of different looks on the runways, but we narrowed it down to these five things that will be perfect for keeping your face up to date.
Once upon a time, Coco Chanel made the little black dress an eternal staple in every woman’s closet by introducing the fashion world to her “Ford” dress. However, this spring, the LBD takes the back seat to the little white dress. The LWD embodies femininity and virtue; it instantly translates elegance to any look. Bystanders will gaze at you in awe.
From the runway:
The LWD dominated the spring 2011 ready-to-wear runway shows, most notably Dolce & Gabbana's. Jill Stuart’s take on the LWD included structured silhouettes mixed with ruffles and frills. Azzaro’s show-stopping LWD encompassed a crystal bodice and a tired white silk skirt both united by a large black bow. Monique Lhuillier’s LWD designs were just angelic. Some other LWD designers included Derek Lam, Chanel, and Alexander McQueen (which is in the hands of the deserving Sarah Burton who took over for the late McQueen).
We have all seen the bright beauty looks of the Spring/Summer catwalks, and have found Derek Lam’s coral eye to be particularly envy inducing. But can we wear it during the day without looking a little freaky?
Derek Lam used a combination of orange and coral shadow close to the upper lid, accented with stripes of iridescent white highlighter, to achieve this high fashion look. The face was kept neutral, with no more than a nude lip to complement. To replicate this look for daytime, lightly shade in the brows and apply a neutral beige shadow from lid to brow. Next, take a thin angled brush, and wet and dip into a sparkling salmon shadow such as Mac 'Neo Orange' Pigment. Apply in a thin line above the upper lash line and finish with a coat of black mascara. As with Lam’s models, keep the face neutral and clean. Just a touch of coral blush such as Benefit’s 'Coralista' combined with a nude lip such as Mac's 'Myth' completes the look.
