2011 has been an incredible year, sartorially speaking. From Anne Hathaway's eight costume changes at the Academy Awards to Diane Kruger...well, whenever the woman puts on clothes, a few of the ladies that didn't make the cut were this close. Ultimately, we decided that the criteria to make Joonbug's "Top Looks of 2011" list lay within three very simple (and very visible) requirements: originality, memorability and game-change factor. Once we began to whittle down our large list, we found that very few looks - no matter how much we loved them - fit these requirements.
Whether you were into kinderwhore or hypercolors, the 90’s were an exciting time in personal fashion. Not everything always made sense (ultra low rise jeans, anyone?) but it was certainly always interesting.
Naturally, the films produced during that time reflect this smorgasbord-aesthetic. Every girl remembers the first time they saw “Titanic” or “Clueless”. We remember sobbing with our friends at the end of “Cruel Intentions,” cheering on the protagonists of “Pretty Women” and “A League of Their Own,” and having our jaws drop during the adrenaline needle scene of “Pulp Fiction.” While these films are not exactly all Oscar-winners, they have stood the test of time in a different way. The reason it was so easy for us to jump right into the worlds of the characters was due to the flawless work of their costume designers.
In the past few years Solange Knowles has become known for her spunkier attitude, and marching slightly off beat to the drums of her dancey diva sister Beyonce. Miuccia Prada never fails to impress us with her cohesive imagination in her collections. Last year’s Spring 2011 collection sent us reeling with delight as we watched the stripes and bananas promenade down the runway. This year Prada sent an equally, if not even more, desirable assortment of ready-to-wear and accessories down the runway that left us revving our engines. Seriously, those shoes have taillights! A perfect counterpart to the retro men’s collection, knee-length, pleated A-line and leather pencil skirts paired with midriff bearing bandeau tops were made for the seemingly innocent companion to the Prada man. We were most impressed by the silhouettes of the swimwear and dresses. Following the contour of a woman’s shape, Prada pieces together contrasting fabrics to emulate, in a much less literal way, the undeniable shape of a vintage hot rod. Flaming footwear and leather clutches with hot rod imagery complete the execution of the throwback to the 50s. Finished with lace and eyelet outwear in paled pink and blue, the collection certainly accomplished the “sweet” précis coined by Miuccia Prada herself.

During last night’s MTV Movie Awards, we saw all of our favorite celebrities decked out in their best Award-worthy outfits. We saw everything from ball gowns to mini dresses to even rompers, and we loved them all (for the most part!). Some of the major trends highlighted were lace, animal print, and metallic designs. Here are our top 15 favorite looks from this year’s event...
1. Selena Gomez’s Giambattista Valli-designed look topped our list. The Disney starlet opted for light, summery-toned separates and a clutch designed by Cecilia. She told MTV's red carpet reporter and Project Runway alum Christian Siriano that as soon as she saw the trendy, but age-appropriate look, she was sure it the one!
