EDITOR-IN-CHIEF
irreverent: Lacking proper respect or seriousness, also: satiric
(Definition courtesy of merriam-webster.com)
It has been said that those in the fashion tend to take the industry, and themselves for that matter, far too serious. Such images that come to mind would certainly include the iconic high-power, jet-setting editrix type. Fresh off her 10-year stint as Editor-In-Chief at Vogue Paris, one of the most prolific and influential fashion publications in existence, Carine Roitfeld, shows that she too has an irreverent side when it comes to fashion.
Where are the rest of the EICs with a bit of edge?
And when we say 'edge,' we're not referring to the EIC who opted to be "cool" and wear the same ensembles for 3 or more days to prove a statement. Oop, Anna is that you?
We mean the bad boys and girls who refuse to cooperate with the police and get arrested. Stefano Tonchi - we're looking at you! Gawker revealed that W magazine's new EIC was arrested in Beverly Hills back in 2009 - yes, when he refused to take a breathalizer test during a routine traffic stop - only to be arrested and walk away with a misdemeanor DUI charge. Tonchi's case was put on hold for almost an entire year, thus he was scheduled to appear in court for trial this past Thursday. Tonchi's appearance in court was confirmed by Tonchi's lawyers to Gawker, which reports that the EIC did not appear, opting for plea arranged by his lawyers.
For goodness' sake, doesn't the justice system understand this man has a magazine to save?
Speculation of what could possibly be occuring at W Magazine rose over the weekend after Gawker posted a photo of Karl Lagerfeld and the magazine's fashion director, Alex White, having a quick chat during the Chanel campaign shoot in Soho.
You see, here's the big deal:
- Alex White was the stylist the day of the Chanel campaign shoot.
- Stefano Tonchi, W Magazine's new EIC, was scheduled to meet with his new W staff that morning.
- Alex White asked the Kaiser to send a letter of recommendation to S.I. Newhouse Jr. for an EIC position.
Last night was amazing night in NYC as I marched uptown to Bergdorf Goodman to socialize with Linda Fargo, Leigh Lezark, Daphne Guinness and more.
The event was to celebrate Steven Klein: 30 Seasons With Akris. The label's designer, Albert Kriemler, was also in attendance. Besides the amazing and devastatingly handsome catering and bar staff, the fourth floor was filled with delightful Akris-clad mannequins and images of Akris clothing throughout the years.
Changes At W Magazine: W Magazine - which doesn't have an editor-in-chief - will soon be searching for one after Conde Nast's plan to cut the magazine's ties to WWD. The two publications were known for sharing staff, Bridget Foley and Patrick McCarthy most notably, with the exception of W's publisher, Gina Sanders. Senior staff of W, including Foley and McCarthy, will now work exclusively for WWD. W Magazine, which was down 45.8% in ad sales for 2009, also was removed from Conde Nast subgroup Fairchild Fashion Group. Conde Nast CEO Chuck Townsend says, "This formally establishes a structure for W consistent with our other consumer magazine titles, and allows FFG the autonomy to focus on their core business-to-business publications and related businesses.”
Typically, I hate it when celebrities reply, "It kind of just happened," when asked about their success.
But apparently Anja Rubik and her boyfriend, Sasha Knezevic, seem to
stick to their story. What began as a just-helping-out-a-friend
situation resulted in Sasha becoming the joint editor-in-chief of 25 Magazine, a
publication Sasha's friend recently purchased and wanted to re-launch.
Eventually they convinced supermodel Anja Rubik to play art director for the Vienna magazine, which is scheduled to launch quarterly in
February. Although she's in the midst of traveling, Anja types away content for the
publication, which will feature topics including food, travel, film and
art. While building a support group of editors between
New York and Vienna, the model duo have also planned a shoot with
Victor Demarchelier capturing Heidi Mount - a step towards the planned
six editorials, one of which will be a men's fashion spread. Considering Anja's
reputation and colleagues within the industry, I wonder which fellow model starlets will opt out of pay to come lend Anja a hand or two.
