ELSA SCHIAPARELLI
This season’s Costume Institute exhibition at The Metropolitan has been generating buzz since long before its May 10th opening. Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations explores the similarities of two industry-shaping designers whose legacies mark two different eras of fashion history. Through simulated conversations accompanied by variously themed galleries, they discuss life, inspiration, and fashion. The intriguing and awe-inspiring concept, brainchild of curators Harold Koda and Andrew Bolton, was inspired by vintage Vanity Fair features (circa 1930’s) in which cover artist Miguel Covarrubias would illustrate “impossible” encounters between historical figures. In fact, Schiaparelli was featured in one of them—paired with Stalin for a heated, and victorious, debate on fashion.
