FLORENCE WELCH
Earlier this month, Florence Welch (of Florence + the Machine) launched her very own jewelry line, Flotique. The line is inspired by her band’s Grammy-nominated second album, Ceremonials. Like her first album, Lungs, Ceremonials has a spooky and somewhat ritualistic feel to it…similar to the haunting vibe that laces Flo’s baroque-pop music, dancing, and dresses.
The 26-year-old musician has a love for romantic, Renaissance, and vintage styles. Currently, her seven piece capsule collection includes necklaces, earrings, a cuff bracelet, and a ring modeled after her birdcage tattoo, all priced under $100. The line feels very 1920-1930 Art-Deco, (perfect to wear at your Great Gatsby premiere parties!) which is certainly very “Flo”, but I must say, I was expecting even more of her witchy, edgy, magical, and even gothic sides to come through. She has been compared to Kate Bush, Bjork, Siouxsie Sioux, and her musical idol, Grace Slick and is one of the most talented, creative, unique, and vibrant female artists around today. In every way of those words: from her style, to her writing, to her voice, to her music, Florence is bold and refreshing, and I am hoping her jewelry line will convey that more in the future.
Glamour has announced their best dressed women of 2012 including 50 A-listers, from socialites, to musicians, to actresses and models. All were handpicked off of the fashion-forward apple tree and given a thumbs up for the attire they have sported so far this year. Some of the women are more obvious choices like Angelina Jolie and Kate Moss; however, Glamour also chose peeps that have made some questionable fashion choices in the public eye. We here at Glam Damn It have a few we’d like to applaud, and other’s that, well, we just keep getting second-hand embarrassment for- as far as their fashion sense goes!
2011 has been an incredible year, sartorially speaking. From Anne Hathaway's eight costume changes at the Academy Awards to Diane Kruger...well, whenever the woman puts on clothes, a few of the ladies that didn't make the cut were this close. Ultimately, we decided that the criteria to make Joonbug's "Top Looks of 2011" list lay within three very simple (and very visible) requirements: originality, memorability and game-change factor. Once we began to whittle down our large list, we found that very few looks - no matter how much we loved them - fit these requirements.
The Grammy's are barely an award show anymore. The producers of the "award show" have decided to focus on the live performances during the telecast; there was only one presentation of an award in the first hour of the show.
The first performance of the night was a tribute to the Queen of Soul - Aretha Franklin. The performance featured the quintet of Christina Aguilera, Jennifer Hudson, Yolanda Adams, Florence Welch and Martina McBride. The group sang a melody of different songs; each sang well in their tribute to the Queen. After the performance a taped message from the Queen herself (who was noticeably thinner), welcomed viewers to the Grammy's, expressed her thanks to the academy for the recognition,
Award-winning singles, a fiery voice and lustrous red hair are just a few of the things that Florence Welch has to offer. The theatrical sparkles and sheer, drapey layers of her on-stage style are some of the other things about Florence that catch my attention.
She's a rising fashion icon, setting the stage for many trends that are transitioning from summer to fall. Longer dress lengths are making way for brisker temperatures, and darker floral prints complement the earlier night skies. These, paired with bold, anatomical jewelry draw inspiration from Florence and the Machine's latest album, Lungs.
Florence Welch has enjoyed an amazing start to her career. At 23 and with only one album under her belt, she has gained the praises of critics and the general audience in Europe and in America. Even for an outsider, Florence and the Machine's first years seem to be have passed extremely fast: in 2006 they played their first gigs and started building a fan base in small London venues, the following year they headlined the 1-2-3-4 Shoreditch Festival, in London, and in 2008 they made their debut at the most important music festivals in the UK scene (in the world, perhaps, too): Glastonbury, Reading and Leeds, and T in the Park. If you haven't heard Florence sing, those credentials alone are enough to impress you, and once you listen to ‘Bird Song', ‘Dog Days Are Over', or ‘You Got the Love', all questions of her talent aptitude are removed: Instant-fan conversion.
