In an effort to clearly induce more obesity, Congress has declared pizza is a vegetable. That's right, 2 tablespoons of tomato paste now counts as a vegetable. But, wait a minute, aren't tomatoes scientifically a FRUIT? We are so confused now...
Earlier this year the Obama administration proposed a bill to make lunches healthier for students. The proposal would require that schools cut back on "unhealthy" sodium-packed foods such as pizza and french fries and integrate more whole grains. Republicans thought otherwise and loved the tomato-paste-as-a-vegetable idea, stating the changes would "prevent overly burdensome and costly regulations and provide greater flexibility for local school districts to improve the nutritional quality of meals."
A modern Speakeasy in Downtown Miami celebrates its Grand Opening this weekend, November 10th, 11th& 12th. Situated at 139 NE 1st Street in the historic Dade Commonwealth Building, The Bank Vault Lounge & Gallery takes us back to the roaring twenties with flappers behind the bar serving Capone-era cocktails and a VIP area inside a real, recycled bank vault. Drinks courtesy of Ketel One Vodka, Zacapa Rum and Johnnie Walker will be served while you sway to the sounds of Ralph Good, DJ Obscene, Paul E, Damaged Goods and Paul Arthur. Art installations by Leonardo Hidalgo complement the ‘Prohibiffic’ décor that spills into four different rooms and surrounds you with marble walls, vaulted ceilings and Roman columns. RSVP for this weekend’s festivities by phone or email: 305.373.1515 or RSVP@thebankmiami.com.
Sleepless Night is a free, thirteen hour cultural arts & entertainment festival featuring over 150 free events at over 80 locations across Miami Beach. Beginning this Saturday evening, November 5th, and continuing into Sunday morning, the array of performances, exhibits, and screenings will be non-stop, thus resulting in a sleepless night for South Florida’s cultural aficionados. However, with Miami Beach’s numerous dining options, there’s no reason to be both sleepless and hungry. Here is Joonbug’s guide to the really late night dining options for the event.
No matter what the time, there’s nothing more satisfying than a big, messy burger to fulfill your late night fatty cravings. Agreed? Then stroll-or jog into 8 oz. Burger Bar for a meal that’s worth every calorie. Open until 5 a.m. on weekends, this burger joint is sure to provide you with the boost you need to continue with the event’s late night activities. Indulge in the luscious Kobe grass-fed burger complete with grilled sweet onions, wilted spinach and roasted garlic aioli or go light with the turkey burger; kick it up with crispy bacon, charred escarole and horseradish dijonaise. Not that hungry? Grab an ice-cold brew and one of their specialty sliders for an ideal snack. The restaurant is located in zone 4 of the event’s program on 11th St. and Alton Road.
For those of you attending Sleepless Night for the art, grab a shuttle to zone 1 on the program, also known as North Beach. There, hidden away at The New Hotel is a little gastropub-inspired spot called Lou's Beer Garden with the best food on this side of town. This tropical outdoor beer oasis is a proud participant of the Sleepless Night event lineup. Peruse the exhibit by artists Adam C. Schrimmer and J.C Bravo while you are serenaded by The Barkless Dawg, a band known for its instrumental acoustic grove. Amidst all the artistry, try the whole branzino a la plancha served with seasoned brussel sprouts, summer baby squash, fingerling potatoes, and tarragon spiced Cherry Tomatoes or have one of Lou’s artisanal small thin crust pizzas and pick a beer from their extremely diverse selection. Did we mention Lou’s is poolside? Just for Sleepless Night, Lou’s Beer Garden is staying open until 5 a.m.
Size matters at Pizza Bar where the place is small and the pizza is not. Known to many as the next best thing to any pizza joint in Manhattan, this small scale pizzeria is serving up larger than life slices at a minimal cost. The pleasant staff at Pizza Bar replicates the New York style thin crust pizza ,and boy, are they good at it! In addition to the abnormally large pizzas, this place offers a variety of fresh salads, chicken wings and sandwiches. Prop yourself at the bar to watch the pizza men at work and enjoy a cold beer or sit at a table. There for you when you’re looking for a mid-Sleepless Night snack, Pizza Bar is open every day until 5 a.m. and is located in zone 2 of the Sleepless Night program on 16 Street and Collins Avenue
Affordable, authentic French Food in Miami Beach? What’s that? Back in zone 4 of the Sleepless Night program, and located on 7th Street and Washington Avenue, lies a cozy, quaint French restaurant delicious enough to satisfy any foodie’s palate called Otentic. Unlike any other French restaurant, Otentic is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 5 a.m. and can offer Sleepless Night attendees a break to immerse themselves in the delicious realm of French cuisine in a casual yet elegant ambiance. Enjoy top quality food at half the price of any other restaurant in SoBe. Yes, this place is affordable and good. Don’t believe us? Try the Farmer steak a l’ Otentic with a velvety homemade blue cheese sauce and a side of frites or have the prosciutto and brie cheese on a crispy baquette. The food speaks for itself.

Strap on your lederhosen and head over to Shake Shack October 7th-16th for their annual Shacktoberfest. Feast upon special menu items like Polish-style Garlic Sausage and Currywurst with Fries. Shake Shack is popular burger boutique from New York that opened it's first Florida location just off Lincoln Road in Miami Beach about two years ago. Their most famous menu items include a variety of burgers, flat-top hotdogs, handspun shakes and sweet custards.
About 1 in 8 women in the United States will develop invasive breast cancer over the course of her lifetime. So odds are, you know someone who's been affected or afflicted. In addition to the lovely reds, oranges and yellows of the changing leaves leaves this season, you're also bound to be seeing a lot of pink since October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month.
The 2011 New England Dessert Showcase is a “must” event for anyone who loves sweets. Hosted by The Anthem Group on Saturday, September 17 at the Sheraton Boston Hotel, the event featured various premiere dessert exhibitors from around New England.
There were a million different ways to indulge my sweet tooth at this event. My first stop was the O’Sugar! Cakery table, designed by Rago Events, displaying an assortment of pastries and chocolates on a fantastical pink and orange spread of flowers, cupcake stands and Willy-Wonka-esque cakes. To taste were a variety of cake and cake pops in red velvet, strawberry shorcake, snickers, and carrot cake.
"Russian Dolls," Lifetime's newest foray into reality television, is the "Jersey Shore" of Brighton Beach. And unlike their MTV peers, these kids can speak other languages ("DTF" and "bros before hos" doesn't count, sorry.) But if you really want to appreciate a hard-partying Russian crowd, it might be time to head deep into Brooklyn, and spend a day in Little Odessa.
As the TV show continues (Thursdays at 10:30), you can find more hotspots for yourself. But if you can't wait, here is your guide to a memorable night out in Brighton Beach.
Grub Hub has found a way to wrangle all your local delivery options under one URL. Kind of like digital, culinary cowboys. Now you don’t have to search the wide open web when you want the food to come to you.
Grub Hub is basically a restaurant aggregator and database. The service started in Chicago a few years ago and has expanded to several other cities, with Miami being one of its latest endeavors. The service is 100% free to use and they even have a free iPhone app that you can download to order food any time, anywhere.
