On her blog, The Lesen Lounge, Berliner by-way-of Canada Leah Buckareff defines a zine as "an independently produced publication. Most often they are self or hand-made books that vary in content, but usually house the creators' personal thoughts, ideas, or artwork both in text and images."
An avid artist and musician, Buckareff has set out to draw a greater awareness of zine publication from the Berlin community. She will ride out through parks every weekend on her "Lesen Lounge," a bike with a brightly painted zine library attached.
Summer time is considered barbecue time, but even if you're not a huge grill enthusiast, it's almost a patriotic requirement to have some sort of grilled or barbecued food on the Fourth of July to celebrate our country's independence. Brother Jimmy's Barbecue based in New York City, is planning on moving down to the sunshine state soon, and to celebrate its upcoming opening and Independence day, the barbecue eatery is teaming up with Sailor Jerry Rum to bring Miamians a free southern-style barbecue fest. Revelers can enjoy a complimentary pig roast along with rum cocktails like the Backyard Tea and Rockabilly Lemonade in front of Brother Jimmy's future Brickell home, which promises to open later in July.
Free Slurpee day has been celebrated on July 11 (7/11) for years, but this year 7-Eleven has added another day for Slurpee giveaways. Tomorrow, on May 23rd, everyone is welcome to enjoy 7.11-ounces of Slurpee on the house between 11 a.m. until 7 p.m. at participating 7-Eleven stores across the U.S.
The extra SlurpFree Day is to celebrate 7-Eleven's first Slurpee branded, sugar-free frozen drink, Slurpee Lite. Slurpee™ Lite Fanta Sugar-Free Mango, has been available since the beginning of May. The 8-ounce slurpee is sweetened with Splenda and flavored by Fanta, making it a low of 20 calories!
This evening, beginning at 4 p.m., stop in at one of the 250+ participating Häagen-Dazs ice cream shops to receive a free scoop of ice cream. Similar to Ben & Jerry’s Free Cone Day that happens every April, any Häagen-Dazs flavor is free for the licking with no strings attached. The hardest decision of Free Cone Day will be how to choose between Coconut Macaron, Banana Split, Java Chip, or any other delicious Häagen-Dazs flavor. President of Shops at Häagen-Dazs, Dawn Uremovich, released a statement explaining, “We wanted to create a fun-filled afternoon that gets people out of their houses and we couldn’t think of a better way than to entire them with a free scoop of ice cream.” Better hurry though! Free Cone Day ends tonight at 8 p.m. To find a participating Häagen-Dazs ice cream shop near you visit their Facebook page’s store locator or check out the graphic below.
In 1979, as a way to thank their loyal customers for their support and for enjoying the "chunkiest, funkiest" ice cream flavors Ben & Jerry's Ice Cream founders, Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, created Free Cone Day. Since then the fan-favorite event has spread to 800 shops in North America, Europe, and Asia.
Now in its 34th consecutive year, Free Cone Day is upon us for all ice cream lovers to take a lick. Brace the lines at your local Ben & Jerry shop this afternoon through tonight at 8 p.m. to enjoy a complimentary scoop of your favorite flavor. Choose from any of their famous ice creams, frozen yogurt, sorbets, or the new member of the Ben & Jerry's family, Greek Frozen Yogurt, available in four great flavors. A must-try today, or any day, is the Greek Frozen Yogurt in Banana Peanut Butter.
Ice cream + charity = one sweet combination.

The first New York City Vegetarian Food Festival last Sunday was a success! With a down-the-block and around-the-corner line, some guests ended up waiting over three hours just to get into the festival. Here's a look at what was inside.
Our favorite foods:
- Regal Vegan: Faux Gras: a toasted walnut and lentil pate that tastes just like the real thing! We had it on a vegetarian bahn mi sandwich--delicious!
- Luna & Larry's Organic Coconut Bliss: Ice cream made from coconut milk. The Cherry Amaretto and Cappuccino were our favorite flavors.
- Liz Lovely Baked Goods: These vegan, organic cookies were so good we couldn't even tell they were vegan. Our favorite was the cinnamon-y Snickerdoodle.
- Earth Balance Soymilk: A intensely chocolatey, smooth, silky soymilk.
- Vegan Marshmallows: There were multiple booths offering vegan marshmallows...Could this possibly be a new trend to keep an eye out for? We'll see! All of the varieties were delicious, so we wouldn't be too upset if it is.
