FRIDA GIANNINI
Frida Giannini, Creative Director for Gucci, has a soft spot for some of the world's least fortunate children, who face the challenges of hunger, lack of clean water, and a life of severe poverty in Africa. Not only does Frida Giannini work for one of the biggest fashion names in the world, she travels to Africa, devoting countless hours to helping impoverished children and other relief efforts through her partnership with UNICEF.
Gucci and UNICEF have been in a partnership since 2005. Since then, Gucci has donated over $12 million to the foundation for the prevention and research of HIV/AIDS and funding for improving the education system of Africa.
In an effort to lessen their impact on the environment, fashion powerhouse Gucci is going green! Creative director Frida Giannini says these practices will be implemented within the month, and that she hopes their initiative will serve as an example to other companies. Gucci's goal in this effort is to eliminate waste without taking away from the company's creativity and signature aesthetic. The company's packaging will be replaced by 100% FSC Certified recyclable paper (no worries- it is still "very beautiful", according to Giannini!) and there will be an organization-wide movement to reduce paper waste. In addition, she is designing eco-friendly mannequins to be used in store. Modern, chic, and a sense of global consciousness- sounds like Gucci to us!
Nathan Jenden: Nathan Jenden, life after Diane Von Furstenberg? It doesn't seem as though there's too much life left - not in his Fall 2010 namesake bevy, that is. It's hard to imagine that this same soul touched so much as a sketching pen in DVF HQ. Though, we've noticed he's taken DVF's print obsession along for his solo ride.
Basso & Brooke: Wow, every moment we bring ourselves back from mourning over Alexander McQueen, there's another resemblance sure to remind us of him again. The bevy, of course, is a less avant-garde rendition - a moderate chic luxe version with - wait for it - fur! Can you imagine if McQueen had played with fur? But, aren't they still looking to replace him? The time is of the essence!
It's nice to see DVF at the ending of all of her shows. It's even nicer to forget there was a man walking behind her.
Oops.
But, it's going to be even better seeing a Chloe/Gucci veteran designer take his spot.
Say goodbye to old creative director Nathan Jenden and hello to Yvan Mispelaere!
Mispelaere is scheduled to begin as a creative director for DVF come April - meaning he will be designing for Spring 2011 - a new take for a new fashion week location, no?
Mispelaere's design days with Chloe brought us plenty of heavy-dandy dresses, with intricate details - so we're expecting a over-technical wrap dress upon his arrival at DVF.
Gucci, is that you?
Couture season couldn't be any cattier this season - but, Frida Giannini doesn't mind getting a piece of the pie, by debuting a couture bevy.
Though the collection won't necessarily show in Paris - it will be available by appointment only - like Versace.
So, of course we plan on obtaining all photos to 'ohh and aww' over.
Mary J. Blige teamed up with fashion force Gucci for a charity event on Wednesday. Her Foundation for the Advancement of Women Now (FFAWN) website states this charity “will accomplish our mission to empower and encourage women by shaping and supporting programs that foster education, career development, strong self-esteem, and personal growth.” The luxurious party took place at the flagship store on Fifth Avenue, which was perfect because Blige told WWD, “We know so many women who come in and out of Gucci. This is our spot."
