Fashionable Expectations ‘Met’ at the MMA Gala 2012

Every year the Metropolitan Museum of Art hosts the annual gala filled with a-listers, fashion, and art. This year proved (as expected) to be another very fashionable evening. The museum was honoring the long-awaited opening of the Costume Institute exhibition Schiaparelli and Prada: Impossible Conversations.

Visitors described the exhibit as being surreal, where The Cut even explained the video footage of Schiaparelli and Prada talking as, “…beautiful- playing in sharp resolution against the walls, almost like moving paintings.” The exhibit included classic quotes by Schiaparelli and Prada among the displays, as well as the designer duds from Prada shoes (including the latest designs), to the well-preserved antiques by Schiaparelli. As you can imagine, the exhibit itself is gasp-worthy.

Dare to Wear: Extreme Men's Trends

Heeled Boots

For those of you unfamiliar with the genius of Rick Owens, allow us to introduce you. This American born but Paris based designer is worshiped by the fashion elite for his innovative, edgy, slightly Goth aesthetic. For Spring 2012, Rick introduced his 100mm Mohawk Wedge Boot for men, his first heeled boot for men. (For those of you too lazy to Google it, 100mm translate to just under 4 inches.) Although visionary, Rick Owens was not the first to introduce the heeled boot trend. Jeffrey Campbell, the beloved footwear brand, had its Areas men’s boot with its 2.5-inch heel. Other designers who have embraced the heeled boot trend are Gareth Pugh and Alain Quilici.

2011's Best Fashion Moments

2011 has been an incredible year, sartorially speaking. From Anne Hathaway's eight costume changes at the Academy Awards to Diane Kruger...well, whenever the woman puts on clothes, a few of the ladies that didn't make the cut were this close. Ultimately, we decided that the criteria to make Joonbug's "Top Looks of 2011" list lay within three very simple (and very visible) requirements: originality, memorability and game-change factor. Once we began to whittle down our large list, we found that very few looks - no matter how much we loved them - fit these requirements.

Picture Perfect: Photo Prints for Fall

The world of fashion is undeniably complex, with countless trends shooting off in different directions and criss-crossing at unexpected intervals. The results of these sartorial intersections are oftentimes unexpected, but there are some combinations we just flat out never expected to see. Example: the words “glamorous” and “screen-printed” applied to the same garment. Screen printing is for concert tees and family reunion sweaters, not the runway, right? As you’ve probably surmised by now, not any more. The fashion world has taken screen printing and bent it to its will; several of our favorite designers have made show-stopping photo prints their newest runway weapon. From historic, architectural trompe l’oeil to photorealistic nature prints, screen printing is adding an entirely new dimension to this season’s latest looks.

Fall 2011 Couture Season Definitely Got it White

Perhaps it was all the love (and ensuing weddings) floating through the summer air or maybe it was a dire need to find an escape from the scorching heat; whatever the inspiration was for the use of bright white hues and tones throughout this season's Couture collections, we salute it.

Never one for routine, Christian Dior put a major spin on classic white this couture season. Dior stayed true to its reputation of being a visionary genius by combining crisp whites with peachy pastels to show the true versatility of light hues, pairing interesting textures with even more interesting textures, and creating voluminoussilhouettes that literally pushed boundaries, or at least daintily brushed against them.
