ICEBERG
With sand at our feet and sexy clothes on the runway, the opening night of Funkshion Fashion Week can only be described as so Miami. We've already gushed about the seriously scandalous styles that were showcased, but the second night in the tent was a complete 360. Yes, the sand was still there (yes, we still wore stilettos), but Funkshion all but transported us to Italy with its swoon worthy sax player that opened the show; Italian spouting host; and live performances that we could only smile and bob our heads to because we had no idea what the artists were saying. The biggest switch, of course, was from the trendy all-American collection debuts of the previous night to the impeccable designs of Roberto Cavalli, Blumarine, and Stella McCartney, among others.
Viewers filled the first floor of Milk Studios Tuesday evening for Project: Monarch by Guillermo De Zamacona. What initially appeared to be a astounding nod towards nature, swiftly warmed into a combination of what looked like digital backgrounds, Givenchy flashbacks, styled Balenciaga pumps and an aura of Believe by Britney Spears. For the sequence of photos De Zamacona took his crew to the sanctuary of the monarch butterflies in Mexico; borrowing from flashy elements of mysticism. The sanctuary is considered a magical place, as tens of millions of butterflies are accounted for between the months of November and Mid-March. Followers are astounded by the mystery of the knowledge of the butterflies annual travel to the monarchs. Throughout the event, photography - embracing the realm of eternal instant - was for sale at the staggering price of $3,500; although $400 could earn guest scaled down versions. Guillermo de Zamacona is a Mexico City native photographer who has built a name for himself through editorial assignments for Interview, celebrity portraiture for Vanity Fair and covers for Spanish Harper’s Bazaar.
Towards the closing of Paris Fashion Week (and the end of fashion month in general), things are looking a bit better, at the least. It's not entirely fabulous - but it's not entirely repetitive either.
Chanel: We're starting to realize that the craze about the Chanel shows is obviously the decor - who cares about the clothing anymore, right? Regardless of Karl Lagerfeld possibly going over budget on a real set iceberg and water delivered from Sweden and giving Baptiste his monthly sugar daddy payoff (we get it), the clothes were just like any other Chanel show. Except that Karl felt it would be funny to add a little humor - fur. As in faux fur. The entire bevy showed faux fur, with heavy thigh-high fur retaliation to Prada's Fall 2009 galoshes. Oops!
