Often times it's hard to believe there was a time before our house music. When music festivals were one weekend and everyone jammed out in General Admission. Before it exploded and when it was just a small "underground thing." The entire genre has evolved over time taking on many different forms but it's an absolute must to go back to it's roots. From the disco days to the early 90s when house started making it's way over to the states. We've rounded up 8 songs that aren't exactly your hard hitting, bass-in-your-face, typical progressive house. These songs can be easily defined as the epitome of what house music really was.
Ten miles of darkness and 2000 cars separated us from the festival we had only dreamt about. As we stared forward, excited and anxious, there was a faint flicker towards the sky and then the familiar explosion of fireworks in the distance. A roar ripped through the desert from the cars around us. Indian chiefs and their topless girlfriends yelled and cheered out their windows, as packs of neon spattered fur boots ran by on foot. Insomniac’s Electric Daisy Carnival has consistently been remarked as the premier Electronic Music festival in the country. With steady competition from Ultra Music Festival , and the multitude of other events that have developed in the past few years, claiming that title is quite a feat. Insomniac’s founder, Pasquale Rotella, has rose through the ranks of California promoters to a point of utmost success. He has absolutely earned his stripes, with the immense scale of his events and consequences this sometimes brings. The risk involved with such massive gatherings as these has made it necessary for Pasquale to impose a new standard for safety at these events, both at the gates and in the festival. In both appearance and functionality, EDC proved to be nothing less than the world-class event that was beckoned for.
Summer in New York is synonymous with rooftop day-drinking, weekend getaways in the Hamptons, and the best musical offerings of the year. This summer, Beach Club at Governors Island is the only place to be, with its dominant roster of electronic music acts. Last Saturday’s Benny Benassi & Friends show kicked off the indoor-outdoor venue’s unbelievable summer EDM series, and it’ll just keep getting better.

Saturday and Sunday’s star-studded lineup promises unlimited debauchery, mischief, and of course, brilliant techno music. French Electro House DJ Joachim Garraud is just one of countless - who’s mourning the recent death of former Apple CEO, Steve Jobs. And like many of his peers, Garraud praised Jobs for pioneering the way for modern music: “…Thank you for the work you make possible everyday. You wrote the future…”
Dutch producer DJ Chuckie released a electro house mashup dedicated to the Macintosh Mastermind titled, “Sun in My Epic Eyes” (DJ Chuckie Respect to Steve Jobs Mashup). The song samples beats from Sandro Silva & Quintino mixed with Myomi’s vocals in “Sun in My Eyes”, and includes a snippet of Steve Jobs’ commencement speech at Stanford University in 2005.
Lollapalooza is a celebration of many genres and tastes in music and this year’s festival did not disappoint. Here were some of Joonbug’s favorites:
OK GO
Ok Go put on an incredible show, full of smolder, swagger and plenty of good humor. The four band members dressed head to toe in either red, blue, green or yellow suits; played a song with sublime intensity on the hand bells, indulged the audience with old favorites and introduced new tunes. A favorite moment included lead singer Damian singing from the middle of the crowd a heart-string tugging acoustic gem. Tongue-in-cheek, honest and power-packed, Ok Go was the delight of the afternoon. Tinie Tempah graced the stage just before OK Go, delivering a set that bubbled with effervescent energy. The beats were crisp, fun and instantly catchy. He is one to watch.
COLDPLAY
One of the most anticipated parties of the year is right around the corner.. Juicy Beach. Miami Music Week will continue to rave on at Nikki Beach on Thursday, March 24 from 12 p.m. - 5 a.m. Break out those neon bathingsuits, because little coverage is needed at this party. The Sunday Snapshot:
The festival set-up, sound and acoustics, as well as operations were extremely professional. It's obvious they have done this before. I loved how they had two stages by each other with back-to-back shows. I parked it at the Budweiser/Playstation stages for most of the weekend due to the line up, but it was incredible to see 10,000 people stacked to see the headliners on the BMI stage. Kudos Lolla.
Sunday Musical Delights & Awards:
Chiddy Bang: Award for Band Best Listened on a CD. I was personally pumped to see Chiddy play. My friends produce their music videos and I have been rocking to their cool remixes/raps for a bit now. Think, Girl Talk meets Drake for their vibe. I was sadly disappointed in the live bit, but I still like them a lot. But the electronic Perry’s stage was a sick addition to the festival. We would be visiting again.
Here is what we loved most about Saturday at Lollapalooza 2010. I wish I was still there!
In addition to the green scene at Grant Park, there were some really cool sponsorship and brand presence situations in the mix. Toyota was giving away cold bandanas and headbands (much needed with the hot temperatures). They always had a line to their tent, which I’m sure got them some good exposure. Another great sponsor was the water filling stations; I know I spent a lot of time here. AOL provided free WiFi, for those of us working during the festival, this was clutch. A fun one was the Q101 Hammock Station, where you could actually take a break and lay in the hammocks for a bit. It’s always enjoyable to see brands and companies giving out products and services that are super beneficial to the festival goer. Giving a consumer something they can really use during the weekend is really going to stand out for marketing purposes.
