Exclusive Interview with Bridgett Artise of Born Again Vintage
There is something mysterious, whimsical, charming and alluring about vintage fashions. Recently, Joonbug had the opportunity to chat with Bridgett Artise the creator of Born Again Vintage. Bridgett who is sophisticated and quite charming takes vintage fashions and fabrics transforming them into "new" collections & thus the Born Again Vintage line was created. Songstress Sheryl Crow has been spotted hitting the racks and after a visit to the shop, we can clearly see why. From pucci-inspired wrap dresses, to chic black cocktail dresses and creative designs - Born Again Vintage takes a new spin on the phrase "vintage clothing."
What does the name Born Again Vintage mean and what's the vibe of the collection? Born Again Vintage means I am reconstructing vintage to infuse new life into it, An old piece is reborn into a new and hotter piece. I've heard my pieces are more like art which I appreciate. I like to think my pieces are classic and perfectly combine two eras creating an elegance that has been long forgotten. What inspired you to get into the clothing business? I was always into fashion but was into the buying end of things-- it wasn't until I started doing talent shows and incorporated fashion shows into them that I realized I had this natural draw to vintage. When people stop coming to the talent shows to see the talent but to see my fashion shows, I figured it was time to give it a go. Who designs the collection and what inspirations influence the styles? I design my entire collection and I'm usually inspired by a vintage texture, print or pattern I come across and adore-- ultimately, gearing my collection around it. With my pieces being one of kind there is no real formula like most designer collections. I let my love for vintage and my new finds guide me on what my pieces will look like. I will say 85% of the time I am in sync with the trends. What's the look for Holiday 2012 and Spring 2013? For spring I am doing alot of blues and greens and when I say blues and greens I mean vintage blue and green (which is usually different from your typical blue and green). Holiday 2012 is looking very sparkly right now....which it should be! So, in essence you are recycling fashion? Please describe. There are so many names for it now, recycle, upcycle, revamp but it all means the same thing. I am giving older clothes new life or a second chance and ultimately lengthening their life cycle so that they never end up in the landfill. Who are some of your celebrity customers? My very first celebrity client was Sheryl Crow, she bought a sweater from me. I have also styled Vivica Fox, Wendy Williams and Kimora Simmons. Advice for anyone looking to start their own fashion line or business? My advice is to take my vintage business class at FIT starting October 2012. I really give all the ins and outs of having a vintage business. What I always say to anyone looking to start a business or a line is have a niche that separates you from everyone else and stay with it. It will not be all glitz and glamour but you have to believe in it when no one else does.

Amazingly, the Harvard graduate's blockbuster script only took three weeks to write and a mere twenty-eight days to film.

Baby Phat: Kimora Lee Simmons Was Fired?

The confusion between Phat Fashions' Baby Phat and its overly ostentatious ‘creative director’ Kimora Lee Simmons, has gone from puzzling to worse: bad press. Initially, judging from Simmons' Twitter, it appeared that the former model and ex-wife to Russell Simmons, had left the label – feeling obligated to lend more selfish self-advertising to her other fashion ventures. “Sometimes we have limited choices in life,” Simmons tweeted. “We have 2 RIDE the WAVE baby! Team FABULOSITY!”

Kimora Lee Simmons' Baby Phat Spring/Summer 2010

The spring/summer 2010 collections we’ve seen have been more covered up than usual, however, skin finally made an appearance on the Baby Phat runway. At Kimora Lee Simmons' Baby Phat runway show, which began with a coral-colored ruffled bikini, skin was in and it was flaunted. There were bikinis in all colors including gold, navy and animal-print - with a revealing blue one-piece that was cut particularly low stealing the show. But isn’t that what summer is about; showing skin, loud music and having fun? If so, the Baby Phat spring/summer collection defined summer. The collection also featured menswear, each male model was shirtless and wearing torn boyfriend jeans with the words ‘Phat Ass’ printed on the back.

Beautiful Braiding

Braiding each other’s hair is a favorite past time of many girls. Well, ladies, it’s back. Designers were chic and simple with braids that were either loosely flowing, or tightly twisted. Pick your favorite and make it your staple hair-do for the upcoming season.

For a loose braid, follow Alexander Wang’s look and pull it off to the side; or follow Kimora Lee Simmon’s Baby Phat models who have a single braid across the top of the their head, with their beautiful locks flowing behind it. Put away your crimper, and go old school with Diane Von Furstenberg by braiding lots of strands into your hair and taking them out—creating a wave.

Reality Hits the Runway

Reality hits the runway for Fashion Week. Those women you love to hate, or hate to love on the oh-so-popular, over-dramatized reality shows, will be showcasing their lines under the tents at Bryant Park. Move over Gucci and Prada—fashion has a new wave of divas. And I do mean divas.

The show I am most anticipating is Whitney Port’s from The City. Her line, Whitney Eve, will make its debut this afternoon. Her inspiration: “Funderland.” E! Online reports she described it as “Alice in Wonderland goes to a really chic cocktail party.” Port is not the only one of her reality co-stars to start a fashion line, (Lauren Conrad and Heidi Montag also have them), but she will be the first to show at Bryant Park.

Russell Simmons Balls Legally Removed Through Wallet

Just under a year after filing for divorce over irreconcilable differences, a Los Angeles Superior Court judge has determined the rate of monthly child support for Simmons to pay.

The 33-year-old ex-wife will get to keep up her fabulous lifestyle — she’ll receive $40,000 a month in child support from the hip-hop mogul. More like hip-hop bump in the road, with that kind of outward cashflow.

Kimora will have sole custody of their two daughters, 9-year-old Ming and 6-year-old Aoki. Which means that with two dependents, Ms. Simmons will be raking in $280,000 a year with very little tax. Listen, girls, here’s how to win at life: marry someone rich (love is a myth), pop out a couple of kids, and then get that divorce. I’m sure nannies and day care can’t cost more than $30,000 a year, so you can sit and watch your other $250,000 do the work. Women in the workplace — HAH!

Happy Birthday Barbie

Guess who is celebrating her 50th February 14th? Barbie, and if you ask me, she still does not look a day over 16. To celebrate this milestone, Barbie will have a runway show at Bryant Park during New York Fashion Week. The iconic doll celebrated her 35th birthday in a similar style back in 1994 when designers Bill Blass, Todd Oldham and Oscar de la Renta created designs for the doll that were then auctioned at an AIDS charity ball. For her 50th birthday this year, designers for the runway show include Vera Wang, Diane von Furstenberg, Anna Sui, Alexander Wang, Kimora Lee Simmons, Tory Burch and Calvin Klein.

Todd Oldham fondly remembers the experience of working with such a global celebrity as one void of any complaints during the fittings. No wonder so many of fashion’s biggest names are willing to work with her.
