Fresh Threads: 3 Designers on the Rise

It’s always intriguing to see what the world’s most famous designers are coming out with every season. However, we think some of the fun of Fashion Week is discovering new designers to obsess over.

We bring you spotlights on three flourishing fashion designers—what inspires them, what their collections are like, and why we expect big things from them!

Suzanne Rae

Brooklyn-based designer Suzanne Rae Pelaez began her fashion career in New York after graduating from Parson School of Design. Her line, Suzanne Rae, is a women’s ready-to-wear line inspired by and made for the modern woman. And it’s awesome.

Editor's Re-See: Twinkle By Wenlan

We have just returned from a desperately needed editor's re-see of the Twinkle By Wenlan Fall 2010 bevy, for the runway show at Bryant Park didn't nearly do the collection justice.

Though the showroom may have been a tad bit toasty, the heat couldn't stop us from wanting to run and jump into the Twinkle By Wenlan bedding decor and wrap ourselves in the strings of yarn the label offers for ordering.

The staff coordinated a stellar presentation of the Fall and Pre-Fall 2010 looks for editors' and buyers' viewing pleasure. Observing the garments up close and personal, we were amazed by the quirky and admirable details that we didn't catch from our seats at the runway show. For example, a one crew-neck mesh dress (with prints along the mid-drift) came equipped with thumb holes at the end of the sleeves.

Pringle of Scotland Pre-Fall 2010

Oh Em Gee, I think I have just died. Honestly, Pringle of Scotland was never on my to-do list. And, sad to say, I kind of feel guilty. I'm not sure if maybe it was the words ‘Pringle' or ‘Scotland' which chased me away. Nevertheless, whatever Clare Waight Keller is planning to do over at the brand, let's pray she stays on the track of her latest pre-fall bevy. The Pre-fall collection showed more than cozy knits, cobweb aesthetics and prints! We love prints! The bevy was so modern and so traditional at the same time. That's what I said. As the collection progressed, silhouettes began to get more dramatic and body conscious. I kind of feel Clare (can I call you Clare?) invited over Thom Browne, Angela Missoni and Matthew Williamson over for wine and tricked them into leaving their sketches to combine them all into one. Hey, it could happen!

Designer Profile: Sandra Backlund

Originally from Umea in the North of Sweden, designer Sandra Backlund now lives in Stockholm after attending Beckmans College of Design in Stockholm. She learned how to knit from her grandmother when she was a child. She has since turned that skill into an art form all her own. She starts every design with the human body, and from there she thinks of ways in which she can highlight, distort and transform the body’s natural silhouette with clothing. Her approach to her garments has a more sculptural root in that everything stems from a few basic bricks that are then multiplied and attached to one another in order to achieve the desired shape.
