LATE NIGHT

FIRST COURSE
Sleepless, But Not Hungry

Sleepless Night is a free, thirteen hour cultural arts & entertainment festival featuring over 150 free events at over 80 locations across Miami Beach. Beginning this Saturday evening, November 5th, and continuing into Sunday morning, the array of performances, exhibits, and screenings will be non-stop, thus resulting in a sleepless night for South Florida’s cultural aficionados. However, with Miami Beach’s numerous dining options, there’s no reason to be both sleepless and hungry. Here is Joonbug’s guide to the really late night dining options for the event.

No matter what the time, there’s nothing more satisfying than a big, messy burger to fulfill your late night fatty cravings. Agreed? Then stroll-or jog into 8 oz. Burger Bar for a meal that’s worth every calorie. Open until 5 a.m. on weekends, this burger joint is sure to provide you with the boost you need to continue with the event’s late night activities. Indulge in the luscious Kobe grass-fed burger complete with grilled sweet onions, wilted spinach and roasted garlic aioli or go light with the turkey burger; kick it up with crispy bacon, charred escarole and horseradish dijonaise. Not that hungry? Grab an ice-cold brew and one of their specialty sliders for an ideal snack. The restaurant is located in zone 4 of the event’s program on 11th St. and Alton Road.

For those of you attending Sleepless Night for the art, grab a shuttle to zone 1 on the program, also known as North Beach. There, hidden away at The New Hotel is a little gastropub-inspired spot called Lou's Beer Garden with the best food on this side of town. This tropical outdoor beer oasis is a proud participant of the Sleepless Night event lineup. Peruse the exhibit by artists Adam C. Schrimmer and J.C Bravo while you are serenaded by The Barkless Dawg, a band known for its instrumental acoustic grove. Amidst all the artistry, try the whole branzino a la plancha served with seasoned brussel sprouts, summer baby squash, fingerling potatoes, and tarragon spiced Cherry Tomatoes or have one of Lou’s artisanal small thin crust pizzas and pick a beer from their extremely diverse selection. Did we mention Lou’s is poolside? Just for Sleepless Night, Lou’s Beer Garden is staying open until 5 a.m.

Size matters at Pizza Bar where the place is small and the pizza is not. Known to many as the next best thing to any pizza joint in Manhattan, this small scale pizzeria is serving up larger than life slices at a minimal cost. The pleasant staff at Pizza Bar replicates the New York style thin crust pizza ,and boy, are they good at it! In addition to the abnormally large pizzas, this place offers a variety of fresh salads, chicken wings and sandwiches. Prop yourself at the bar to watch the pizza men at work and enjoy a cold beer or sit at a table. There for you when you’re looking for a mid-Sleepless Night snack, Pizza Bar is open every day until 5 a.m. and is located in zone 2 of the Sleepless Night program on 16 Street and Collins Avenue

Affordable, authentic French Food in Miami Beach? What’s that? Back in zone 4 of the Sleepless Night program, and located on 7th Street and Washington Avenue, lies a cozy, quaint French restaurant delicious enough to satisfy any foodie’s palate called Otentic. Unlike any other French restaurant, Otentic is open Fridays and Saturdays from 9 a.m. – 5 a.m. and can offer Sleepless Night attendees a break to immerse themselves in the delicious realm of French cuisine in a casual yet elegant ambiance. Enjoy top quality food at half the price of any other restaurant in SoBe. Yes, this place is affordable and good. Don’t believe us? Try the Farmer steak a l’ Otentic with a velvety homemade blue cheese sauce and a side of frites or have the prosciutto and brie cheese on a crispy baquette. The food speaks for itself.

The Dutch is Sexy

To personify a restaurant as “sexy” is slightly confusing. Sure, food is beautiful and feeding someone can be sexy, and we all know that drinking can lead to sexy behavior, but can a restaurant, a building that houses simple tables, chairs and water glasses, be sexy? Absolutely.

Case in point: Andrew Carmellini’s The Dutch.

The newly opened SoHo establishment has been packed since its debut a few weeks ago and it’s easy to understand why--not only is the food well executed and the cocktail list creative, but the space meets a many other “sexy” criterion. Small white candles illuminate across an otherwise dark dining room. Shiny oysters glisten over perfectly crushed ice. Billecart brut is poured effortlessly into tall flutes. With a perfect mix of New York City sophistication and romantic French bistro, The Dutch sets the stage for a sexy evening of sipping and smiling. Date-goers are almost guaranteed a good time based on the ambiance and food alone.

A Sad Exit in Brooklyn

New York City and followers of the indie-music scene are mourning the tragic death of drummer Gerhardt “Jerry” Fuchs, who died on Sunday from a five-story fall down an elevator shaft in Williamsburg, Brooklyn. While riding in a manual freight elevator during a benefit party, the elevator got stuck between the fourth and fifth floors. A passenger riding with Fuchs had managed to jump to the fourth floor, but on one of Fuchs’ attempts to jump to the fifth floor, his clothing caught on something in the passageway and he fell to the bottom of the elevator shaft.

Alex Frankel, Fuchs’ roommate and singer of the band Holy Ghost!, of which Fuchs was the drummer, arrived at the party shortly before 1AM to find the distressing news that someone had fallen down the elevator shaft.
