MARILYN MONROE
It seems that we as fashion and beauty lovers can never tire of exploring the world of the iconic Ms. Monroe. Among the many individuals who were lucky enough to have a personal relationship with the blond bombshell, one design house in particular has a connection like no other. Marilyn celebrated Ferragamo at the start of his career with her extensive collection of the Italian-made footwear. Now, in the fifty-year anniversary of her death, the brand celebrates Marilyn. A tribute exhibition titled “Marilyn” opened June 19th at the Museo Salvatore Ferragamo in Florence, Italy.
The adored Marilyn Monroe would have turned 86 today if not for her tragic and mysterious death at 36-years-old. Monroe, born Norma Jean Mortensen still remains to this day one of the most popular Hollywood stars in history. She continues to gain adoring fans and an immense amount of attention in regards to her life and story decades after her death. With movies, books, and even make-up lines being made in her honor and memory, Monroe will live on forever on film and in our hearts.
Happy Birthday Marilyn!
When Marilyn Monroe danced across movie screens and proclaimed “Diamonds are a girl’s best friend!”, it was one of the most iconic moments in cinema history. The song became a highlight not only for Marilyn’s career, but for many of the jeweler’s mentioned. They garnered mainstream attention --and with good reason. Finally, women had a counterpart to the oft-repeated “dog is man’s best friend." Who needs to play fetch when you could play dress up?
Laying claim to one of the largest diamonds ever discovered, the Tiffany Yellow Diamond, the company set the bar high for excellence in jewelry design early on. At 287.42 carats in the rough, 128.54 carats with 90 facets after it was cut, the massive rock has only been known to have been worn twice since its 1878 discovery in South Africa (one of those women was, of course, Audrey Hepburn while promoting Breakfast at Tiffany’s).
Last night Christian Dior and the Weinstein Company hosted an exclusive preview at Milk Studios of the two day only exhibit 'Picturing Marilyn.' In celebration of the upcoming film My Week With Marilyn, the exhibit displays 62 rare, unseen photos of the late icon. Including several photos from "The Last Session" taken by Bert Stern, just a few weeks before Marilyn's mysterious death. It also included an unpublished shot of her in a black, backless Dior gown. To honor that shot, Dree Hemingway made an appearance in a replica of the gown worn by Marilyn during that last photo session in 1962. Hauntingly beautiful!

They say diamonds are a girl's best friend. The love for them has been imprinted in little girl's minds since Marilyn Monroe shimmied across a stage covered in them. Well, sorry men, but scientists have just discovered a diamond planet. So, if you were having trouble keeping up with the payments on that 1 carat, imagine what's going to happen when some oil heir buys the diamond planet for his mistress.
Reuters reports a the planet has been discovered some 4,000 light years away. The planet is about the size of Jupiter but 20 times more dense. The planet is apparently made of so much carbon that scientists calculate it must be crystalline --effectively making it diamond.
Vogue + plus-sized models....this combination sounds antithetical, right?
We're used to seeing the impossibly skinny models on the magazine covers of Vogue. And after reading the magazine from cover to cover, we begin to feel guilty about that cheeseburger and ice cream. Vogue, a renowned fashion bible praised by many, has also been scrutinized and castigated for solely featuring models who look unhealthily thin. Franca Sozzani, the editor-in-chief of Vogue Italia, strives to shatter the mainstream obsession with skinniness and also aims to dispose of Vogue Italia's negative reputation of narrow-mindedness.
Summer. Is. Here! It's pool party, beach and sun-bathing time. And you know what that means - swimsuits! Sure, some dread the 'ol swimsuit, especially when we're all still a little pasty white here on the East coast. (Self-tanner, anyone?) But the arrival of the swimsuit is synonymous with the arrival of warm weather and that's something to celebrate! We almost forgot what it felt like to bikini shop. We also didn't bother to look into what was 'in' for swimwear this season -mostly out of bitterness.
Trends this season include super string bikinis, hardware, cut-outs (again), animal prints and shiny/metallic styles. While reading through the list, one realizes these aren't really trends. Let's be honest, it's the same thing every season when it comes to swimwear. Regardless, there are some uber cute styles out there. So get the self-tanner ready, hit the treadmill and forego that Twinkie because, ladies, it is swimsuit season!
It may be closer to 2050 than 1950, but many Fall 2010 collections have us wondering, “Haven’t we seen that before?”
Feminine, demure, 50s-insprired items have made a comeback in tops, bottoms, shoes, handbags, and accessories. Contrary to the image that may come to mind, the iconic look is not all about poodle skirts and pink bomber jackets (although they may be pretty darn cute for Halloween).
Paris Hilton did the unthinkable this past weekend when she dressed up like the deceased legendary Hollywood starlet, Marilyn Monroe. What a way to honor the memory of the actress by overexposing your cleavage, Paris. The no-longer-relevant socialite was attending the launch party for her latest perfume, Tease. This is Hilton’s 10th perfume to date. Looks like she actually found something valuable to do with her time aside from getting busted for DUI’s and stealing other girl’s boyfriends.
