MERT ALAS
When you think fashion photography, you think Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott. The team is best known for their stunning magazine covers, ads, and spreads of famous leading ladies. They have photographed the likes of Kate Moss, Jennifer Lopez, Madonna, and Penelope Cruz, just to name a few.
As we saw during February’s Fashion Week, Versace’s fall/winter 2012/2013 collection is filled with leather, studs, and fishnet stockings. The designs along with the harsh bang-lines and cat eye makeup made for a dark, rocker-chic show, and as far as their ad campaign goes, they have just bumped that ambiance up another couple of notches. The combination of model melancholy brilliantly expressed by Elza Luijendijk, photography work by the ultimate duo- Mert Alas and Marcus Piggott, and Joe McKenna’s styling, made for a dark, gothic-chic ad campaign.
We wonder how many hours of yoga Natasha Poly put in before arriving on set for her Spring 2010 Gucci ad campaign photo shoot. Not saying that we couldn't power vinyasa all day ourselves, but does she look ferocious or what? With so much photographer-switching going on by fashion houses lately, Gucci has followed suit by switching from Inez and Vinoodh to Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot for a crystal clear view of a sexy-deep-blue-sea type of thing. Meanwhile, Poly renewed her contract, after posing for the label since 2005. But maybe it's time we actually pay attention to the clothes, instead of her fabulous body. Oh, there's a male model in there, too. Oops!
