Kelela Mizanekristos didn’t emerge on the music scene, she was approached. The LA based-performer, flaunting beautiful thick dreadlocks off to the side, embraced her veiled, weightless vocals on her new mixtape Cut 4 Me. With a fine-tuned ear for underground productions and layered sound, Kelela was able to break down subcultures and bring its rawest elements to the mainstream pop conscious. Cut 4 Me can be categorized as R&B post-dubstep, dark dance music, or anything that compliments the bass music scene that has risen from the ashes of digital recording technology. She gives much ado to her producers, whom shared common goals, when it came to the finished product.
The hallmark of a great selector is the ability to mix music that fills a dance floor but can also be enjoyed during the day—you know, the daytime, those off-hours that clutter our lives between starry moments when real life happens.
2012 is upon us. It may be our last year on Earth if we believe the Mayans (and that awful John Cusack movie), but that won’t put an end to the preparation, partying, and regretful resolutions that come with the turning of a new page on the calendar. Whether you plan on ordering pizza and watching Dick Clark with mom, or you want to hit the clubs and forget there was a 2011 altogether, here are some jams to have on your New Year’s Eve mix.

2011 is a major victory lap for UK electronic veterans Above & Beyond, as their constantly evolving Anjunabeats label entered it's 10th year and saw it's 200th release. While the trance unit, comprised of Jono Grant, Tony McGuiness, and Paavo Siljamäki, already hit some huge milestones with this summer's Group Therapy record and a few sold-out performances at the Hollywood Palladium, their musical year is far from over. The 9th installment in their annual Anjunabeats collection is out this Sunday, showcasing some of the best work from Anjunabeats artists and the trio themselves. We got an exclusive first listen to the two-disc compilation, and trance-heads everywhere will be happily immersed in A&B's soundscapes.
The art of being a DJ is so expansive and ever-changing, that the title itself is hard to classify. Is a DJ someone with a milkcrate of old records, some turntables, and limitless creativity? Or is it someone who’s mastered the art of Pro Tools and Reason and is ready to take their digital playlists to clubs all over the world? For some artists, the answer is simply both. Swiss artist Deetron has taken this duality to heart on his new Balance 20 mix, a combination of electronic music methods old and new that manages to come together as something that’s as cohesive as it is eclectic.
Part of the rap duo Clipse, Pusha T, is ready to release his mixtape Fear of God.
Pusha had a lot of questions to answer when signed to Kanye West's G.O.O.D Music Imprint. Pusha had already released a few mixtapes and albums together with his brother Malice as Clipse and the Re-Up Gang. The question would be consistency? Would he be able to keep the fire going?
Complex magazine had the privilege of hearing the mixtape before its release and has declared it a winner.
The mixtape will release March 21, 2011. You can also keep up to date through his homepage.
