Coney Island's famed Siren Festival is gone but not forgotten. But the Village Voice is endorsing a new series, 4Knots, whose worth as an alternative will be determined this Saturday, July 16th at the South Street Seaport Pier 17.
Mice Parade
By far one of the most impressive instances of genre-blending, shoegazing, inventive rock is percussionist, Adam Pierce's band, Mice Parade. This experimental mind melds intricate, precision drumming with a slew of overdubs, acoustic (and electric) guitars, violins, old synths, vibes (and other world instruments) and elevated, soothing vocal melodies to birth an indelible new sound that transcends the mold of the post-rock movement. Shinning through as heavy influences are African based beats and Eastern harmonics.
Stream three new albums in their entirety (visit NPR’s First Listen page) before they hit stores on June 28th!
1) 'Rave on Buddy Holly': a tribute to the rock ‘n’ roll pioneer, features Holly covers by Paul McCartney, The Black Keys, Modest Mouse, Cee Lo Green, Fiona Apple, and many more. The album’s A-List artists make up a rather impressive and diverse collection, and all prove to be a remarkable fit for Holly’s timeless tunes.
Through the honored vocals of artists like The Black Keys, Patti Smith, Lou Reed, Paul McCartney, Graham Nash, Modest Mouse, My Morning Jacket and Fiona Apple, rock 'n' roll pioneer Buddy Holly continues to live on long after his tragic death. The sonic sweeping star would be 75-years-old on September 7th of this year and the highly anticipated release of Rave On Buddy Holly proves that his music is still more relevant than ever and his influence has not ceased to spread across all music soundscapes.
The production of Rave On Buddy Holly celebrates the rock icon's 75th birthday and enduring legacy with a 19-song collection of outstanding Holly covers by an eclectic assemblage of today's most talented musical visionaries. Due on June 28th from Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group, the album was overseen and produced by the esteemed film-music supervisor Randall Poster, who is known for his collaborative works with directors such as Martin Scorsese, Todd Haynes, and Wes Anderson.
In the music world's strangest pairing since Kanye West got "lost in the world" with Bon Iver, Outkast heavyweight BIg Boi has confirmed that he's in the studio with indie godfathers Modest Mouse. Followers had to wonder if Mr. Boi's Twitter account had been hijacked by some skinny-jeaned fixed-gear jockey when he tweeted last week "Been camped out in the Lab with Modest Mouse all week, workin on the new mouse LP, coolest cats ever. Long Live The Funk."
Get this: Outkast's Big Boi has been assisting in the production of Modest Mouse's new album. Though Issac Brock, singer-guitarist of the band, and the guys haven't mentioned anything, Big Boi dropped a series of excited tweets about their work.
"Me and @mouche1 [producer Chris Carmouche] in the studio workin with Modest Mouse on their new album Turnt up ! Shout out to Issac and the crew!"; "Been camped out in the Lab with Modest Mouse all week, workin on the new mouse LP, coolest cats ever. Long Live The Funk"; "Modest Mousin' it."
Apache Beat, 8PM, Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2
by Kelsey Paine
New wave/indie rockers Apache Beat offered up atmospheric indie-rock mixed with a large dose of style during their set at Rockwood Music Hall last night. The five-piece band oozes that certain 'cool factor' that all bands aspire to, but only few actually possess. This is due mostly to Australian front woman Ilirjana Alushaj, a dark-haired beauty who was declared one of the most stylish New Yorkers by Time Out New York and even edits The Pop Manifesto, an online culture magazine. Writhing around the stage, twisting the mic cord around her lithe black-clad body, Alushaj belted out the band's new single “Another Day” a soaring new-age dance pop gem, and the ominous drum-heavy “Let It Go” with an ethereal and erotic presence that lit up the space's small stage. Look for Apache Beat's just-released debut album, Last Chants, for even more of the band's eclectic mix of punk, pop and psychedelic new wave.
Sun Airway, 9PM Rockwood Music Hall Stage 2
As 2010 makes it final descend into 2011, it may be time to slow things down and appreaciate the beauty that is South Florida. The weather is changing my friends, embrace it. Let the soft cool breezes flow into your hair. Enjoy the orange sunsets as they fade into the beautiful night sky. Then grab a hoodie and snuggle up in the sand with that special somebody. It’s Monday, the laziest day of the week, so why not ?
Devendra Barnhart - Baby
When I first heard of Devendra, I was shocked by the artistical passion that he displays in his work. Every track has strong meaning and it's not just another song to fill the album. Clearly evident in the song Baby.
