POLITICAL FASHION
Reality check: fashion and politics have never seemed to get along. Apparently, lawmaking calls for boring pantsuits and “mommy-style” skirting. Not any more. Thanks to Michelle Obama’s favorite designer, Maria Cornejo, Capitol Hill may be kissed with a little sassiness. During Fashion Week, Cornejo said Washington D.C. is stepping up its style.
Designer Marc Jacobs added two new t-shirts to his Marc by Marc Jacobs accessory line last week, and they definitely make a political statement. The cotton shirts are scribbled with the words “I pay my taxes, I want my RIGHTS!” and, according to manager Bret Paterson of the 385 Bleecker Street store, the t-shirts are selling quickly: "The response has been positive as we’ve been unpacking them over the past couple of days.” The t-shirts, which sell for only $24, are designed with a lesbian couple with a baby all in black dresses and a simple scripted shirt accompanied by a dollar sign and American flag. So whether you’re gay or in support of Gay Rights run to the nearest Marc Jacobs store-these tees are fashionable, political, and only available for a limited time; the perfect way to make a statement.
