Play Urbanology at the BMW Guggenheim Lab

A pornography convention wants to come to your city. It's a good opportunity to generate some much-needed revenue. Do you allow it to meet at your convention center?

A dolphin is trapped in one of your city's rivers. It'll cost one million dollars to fish it out and bring it to safety. Do you save the dolphin?

These are some of the questions you and other participants may have to answer when you play Urbanology, an interactive group game where players become city-builders, deciding by majority rule what categories of urban planning to prioritize. Located at the new BMW Guggenheim Lab pop-up on the Lower East Side, Urbanology consists of a chessboard-esque gameboard and five game pieces, each representing a different category of city-building such as sustainability, mobility, and affordability. Each game piece begins in the middle of the board. Players begin to answer questions and they either move forwards or backwards --a positive or negative space-- depending on what the players value for their city. At the end of the game, participants will be told which real city their mock city most resembles; for example, a city which values sustainability above all will likely be compared to Mumbai.

Permanent Pop-Up: Burger Parlor

Chef Joseph Mahon, who is more famously known for Los Angeles’ Bastide (which closed recently), has announced the long-awaited debut of his own establishment. Often complimented on “his ability to do simple things very well”, Mahon set up shop in Rialto, a breakfast shop that is currently in business, and is making only one change: he’s not serving breakfast. Burger Parlor is Riato’s nighttime counterpart and is what Mahon considers a “permanent pop-up”.

Mahon is jumping on the gourmet burger bandwagon with his commitment to high quality ingredients from across the country. Burger buns and hormone-free Nebraskan beef are baked and ground fresh every day. Unlike the gourmet burgers that we’ve been seeing however, Mahon’s variation are on the cheaper side (the most expensive burger is $11). There are a ton of options to choose from, whether it be the Chip Shot, a burger topped with fontina, potato chips, tomato confit, mushrooms, arugula, and chipotle aioli or the Staten Island, a meatball burger complete with provolone, tomato sauce, and basil pesto. On the side you have the option of classic belgian fries or if you’re REALLY hungry, the Snack Shack: a hearty combination of fries, short rib chili, and a house made cheese sauce. For those watching their figure (we recognize the contradiction) there are three delicious salad options. Wash it all down with one of the many craft beers on tap or with your choice of shakes and floats. And at the end of the meal, satisfy your sweet tooth with a banana bread pudding or an ice cream sandwich.

Burger Parlor is located at 108 W. WILSHIRE AVE FULLERTON, CA 92832
Open Wednesday-Saturday 6PM-11PM

Today's Field Trip: DecadesTwo Pop-Up Shop

We stumbled over to no man's land of fabulosity yesterday when Kiki de Montparnasse announced they would be hosting a DecadesTwo pop-up shop through Sunday March 21st.

We were totally unprepared for what we saw - Chanel tweed jackets, purses and shoes, Christian Louboutin, Alexander McQueen, Balenciaga, Marc Jacobs and Goyard bags, fur, fur and more fur, and plenty more (dresses, coats, skirts, etc.) all at discounted prices.

Target's Liberty of London Popup Sells Far Out

In a psychedelic rainstorm in New York City, we made our way to Target's Liberty of London popup on the edge of Bryant Park, only to discover that this hyped-up venue had been closed a day early due to product outage. A tribute to the fashionable, '60s-meets-down-home patterns and textures, the popup expressed a trend in modern expression, selling out of everything from the popular, low-priced shirt dresses to paisley piggybanks we thought would fit nicely on our coffee tables.

Drinks on the Plaza at Rockefeller

Bar 30, a new pop-up restaurant in Rockefeller Plaza is bringing the trend of outdoor drinking to the masses. Built by renowned designer Christopher Coleman, the glass-encased structure will be short-lived, as the suburban clubhouse styled eatery will only remain in the location until September 4th.

Serving lunch, dinner, and drinks from the nearby Rock Center Café, and later making the switch to a menu from AJ Maxwell’s steakhouse, Bar 30 is one more entry into the exploding market of outdoor drinking establishments and seasonal dining experiences. The restaurant, with an open air terrace, is serving from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily in the center of 30Rock.
