Runway Recap: Funkshion Fashion Goes Italian

With sand at our feet and sexy clothes on the runway, the opening night of Funkshion Fashion Week can only be described as so Miami. We've already gushed about the seriously scandalous styles that were showcased, but the second night in the tent was a complete 360. Yes, the sand was still there (yes, we still wore stilettos), but Funkshion all but transported us to Italy with its swoon worthy sax player that opened the show; Italian spouting host; and live performances that we could only smile and bob our heads to because we had no idea what the artists were saying. The biggest switch, of course, was from the trendy all-American collection debuts of the previous night to the impeccable designs of Roberto Cavalli, Blumarine, and Stella McCartney, among others.

Shakira to Open World Cup in Style

For the opening ceremony of the World Cup today, Shakira will be belting out the official song of the games-and rocking Roberto Cavalli. The designer custom designed for the singer a zebra-print jumpsuit and a fringed skirt made of animal-print silk. Leather fringe bracelets and cuffs made out of roughly cut pearls complete the ensemble. [Shakira]

The Quick Stop: March 16th

Taylor Jacobson's New Gig: Former Rachel Zoe slave, Taylor Jacobson, recently landed a new gig with Armani Exchange as an visual consultant and fashion expert. If we said it any faster, we would have said she's in retail hell - but we didn't. She will be assisting the retail chain and the launch of their new Hollywood Robertson Boulevard store. Work, girlfriend!

Louis Vuitton Boast on Facebook: Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Louis Vuitton, Yves Carcelle, is far past his Twitter 140 characters, but made his statement clear via Facebook as follows:
"If you look at Facebook for instance, we are the luxury brand that has the biggest number of friends by far. Close to a million people in the world have declared themselves friends of Louis Vuitton. We use Twitter. We are actually working very strongly on revamping completely the platform of our Web site so in the next few months the Web site will become even more interesting and interactive. We think that it’s a brand new area that opens to luxury and it’s like any new technology. It can be poorly done or it can be a fantastic way of developing a whole universe around who you are." Arrogant or label narcissist? We can't decide.

Interview: Pras, Something of Renaissance Man

Pralazrel "Pras" Michel is probably best known for his involvement in the infamous group The Fugees. Not only was Pras a lead vocalist in the group, he also met and introduced Lauryn Hill to fellow hip-hop sensation, Wyclef Jean. Pras' other artistic interests led to appearances in several feature films, including his own documentary, Skid Row. Through his music and film projects, Pras has been able to accomplish his main goal-to make others aware of the important social and humanitarian causes while maintaining constant originality. You go Pras! And off he goes-pariculary by continuing his goal with his new group AXIXS. AXIXS, represents a fresh hip-hop mix with electro funk, alternative rock, and reggae. Selina Carrera (originally a poet) and singer Stefi Nova complete the distinctiveness of the group and add to the lyrical originality and stellar vocals of AXIXS.

Trend Alert: Exotic Birds

“When the weather outside is frightful” fashion is always so delightful. This season brought the return of our fine feathered friends in collections from Marc Jacobs to Maï Lamore. If your style is more simplistic and you’re not into dressing like a peacock or a parrot, then do the next best thing and accessorize. Shoes, rings and even necklaces are being decorated with these exotic birds; so anyone and everyone can be a part of this trend. Watch out fashionistas--exotic birds are flying into a department store near you. Are you ready to embrace them?

Trend Alert: Rain In Style

There's more to rain than just umbrellas and rain boots-there's brands like Burberry and Hunter, providing refreshing items that can ease up the rainy days. Usually, one would don their dowdiest looks to get muddy and wet in. Yet, since Prada's fall debut of thigh high galoshes and body conscious wools, it's possible to look your best during a mad drizzle. With the recent launch of Burberry's Art of the Trench - showcasing savvy spenders in their best trench coat gear - we've become inspired by rain looks you can try, channeling Mary Kate Olsen and Kate Moss in their rainy best. Our fall rainy best picks are: a printed Roberto Cavalli Trench ($3588, www.luisaviaroma.com), fun Marc by Marc Jacobs umbrella ($18, Marc by Marc Jacobs stores), metallic Hunter boots ($115, Bloomingdales) and Burberry Canvas Monogram ($6485, www.burberry.com) - just to name a few.

Trend Alert: Extreme Studs

The fashion world exploded with studs last fall, pairing edgy heels and rocker-style jackets and belts with more feminine flowing dresses and floral designs. What’s in store this year? Taking this studded inclination into a hard-edged reality with even more metal for your pleasure.

Note the Givenchy Stud Gloves. The ultimate slap-in-the-face dueling necessity for anyone looking to be noticed, hands down. A little offsetting, but can the house of Givenchy do wrong? We think not.

Grunge: More Than Flannel and Self-Loathing

Adorned with a cover photo of Kurt Cobain, the newly released Grunge photo book chronicles the pivotal scene that dominated the music in the Pacific Northwest during the late eighties and early nineties. The photos, comprised from Sub Pop photographer Michael Lavine’s personal collection, provide an unabridged look at the bands that dominated the pivotal scene in American music as well as a look at the group of young fans disenfranchised by an over-commercialized music scene. Lavine contributed to the alternative Sub Pop aesthetic by providing the album art photos for Nirvana, Mudhoney, Dwarves, Screaming Trees, and others.
