The Best of Milan Fashion Week S/S 2012

Miuccia Prada never fails to impress us with her cohesive imagination in her collections. Last year’s Spring 2011 collection sent us reeling with delight as we watched the stripes and bananas promenade down the runway. This year Prada sent an equally, if not even more, desirable assortment of ready-to-wear and accessories down the runway that left us revving our engines. Seriously, those shoes have taillights! A perfect counterpart to the retro men’s collection, knee-length, pleated A-line and leather pencil skirts paired with midriff bearing bandeau tops were made for the seemingly innocent companion to the Prada man. We were most impressed by the silhouettes of the swimwear and dresses. Following the contour of a woman’s shape, Prada pieces together contrasting fabrics to emulate, in a much less literal way, the undeniable shape of a vintage hot rod. Flaming footwear and leather clutches with hot rod imagery complete the execution of the throwback to the 50s. Finished with lace and eyelet outwear in paled pink and blue, the collection certainly accomplished the “sweet” précis coined by Miuccia Prada herself.

Fashion Let's Down Her Updo

Fellas made sure their pocket squares were looking crisp while Gals overdid their makeup in celebration of, you guessed it, Fashion's Night Out.

Instead of night clubs, elite fashion houses were the highlight of the city last Thursday, September 8th. Salvatore Ferragamo was the spot to be on 5th Avenue this year, while posting a 'Private party' sign outside. All the normal people were lined outside, trying to get a peek of what was happening beyond those walls, as we tippy-toed past security.

Inside, champagne and house pomegranate cocktails were flying. Accompanied by tuna tartare hors d'oeuvres about the size of a cigarette. There were also many other interesting different finger foods, one of which even included foie gras in a flaky pastry. The best bite of the night had to be the red velvet balls. They were so delicious, you probably could've found yourself fighting for the last one with Sports Illustrated super model Jessica Hart...

Style Star: Rosie Huntington-Whitely

Back in the early 90s, Rosie Huntington-Whitely was no more than a smalltown girl living on an English farm. After a major growth spurt at age 13, she went from being teased for her tiny chest and big lips to being voted Most Likely to Become a Supermodel.

She soon became bored of her farm life, and decided to travel to London. At age 16, she was ‘discovered’, and starred in a commercial for Levi’s. Although she couldn’t drive, she spent her entire check on a Ford Ka, wholeheartedly believing it was the only time she would ever get paid for modeling. Needless to say, she was wrong.

Salvatore Ferragamo's Latest Client: Suri Cruise

It's St. Patricks Day; and as much as we are attempting to ignore the mosh pits of green cruising down the Avenue of Americas, we can't.

But we will discuss the buzz on the internet today, starting wtih Suri Cruise's $850 dollar Salvatore Ferragamo handbag.

As a tiny tot for fashion, there are a few differences between Suri and us. Actually, there are several major differences between Suri and us. They are:

Paparazzi: Our intimate days of playing tag, hide-and-seek and obsessing over our favorite pink Hula Hop, did not consist of getting photographed by prying eyes to land on the cover of gossip magazines.

Milan's Fashion Roundup

Who's bored with Fashion Month already? And who wishes London Fashion Week was a bit longer? Just to give Matthew Williamson a second chance. Oops!

But in "let's make the best of it" fashion, we've pulled the best and worst looks from Milan Fashion Week. Take a glance:

Dolce & Gabbana: Of course, it's a recession, so the hot duo designers aren't creating anything as fabulous as our eyes are used to seeing. Blazers layered with lingerie slips aren't quite fabulous, and neither are body suits.

Gucci: Typical fall style is epitomized in one of Gucci's best bevies; however, the extremely slim trousers weren't too pleasing. Neither was Frida's apparent eagerness to become a Balenciaga minimalist. But to each it's own, right?

Trend List: Statement Bags

Want your look to make a statement with one accessory? You can pretty much count on Chloe for an “it” bag. A standout bag from their fall collection is a tubular shoulder bag with a chain handle, tassels and abstract metallic flower embellishments. Plus, the body of the bag itself is comprised of leather disks, creating an interesting and new texture and silhouette.

Texture also played an important role in the bags shown at Fendi. Leather, fur and skins embellished with semiprecious stones on structured frames made for a very luxurious accessory. Other labels to look at for a statement bag include Christian Lacroix, Salvatore Ferragamo, Chanel and Sonia Rykiel. Consider interesting embellishments like stones, metals or chains as well as innovative silhouettes and luxurious materials for the key elements.

Salvatore Ferragamo and Yohji Yamamoto

Salvatore Ferragamo and Yohji Yamamoto, an unlikely duo in the fashion world, are coming together to create a new line of shoes called Salvatore Ferragamo for Yohji Yamamoto.

“Ferragamo is the top specialist in shoe making and working with them was an amazing experience that bought me lots of happiness,” said Yamamoto in an exclusive interview. Yamamoto commented that while Ferragamo’s shoes were original - they lacked a masculine, unisex feel.

Some of the standout shoes in the collection include an urban take on the hiking boot in a black-and-white pattern; a smooth two-toned lace-up, and a strawberry red pull-on ankle boot.

The shoes will be available in July in Yamamoto boutiques, 35 of Ferragamo flagship stores and, selected points of sales. Retail prices range from $470 to $1050.

Introducing Eco Ferragamo

This spring, Salvatore Ferragamo will release a line of environmentally friendly handbags called Eco Ferragamo. To create the earth-loving line, the Florentine luxury brand employed an innovative tanning technique that uses naturally derived tannins from tree bark.

But don’t worry, you won’t have to sacrifice style for your environmental principles. Despite being biodegradable and water resistant, the leather bags retain a natural pliancy and sheen, and colors come in a wide range that includes tobacco brown, lemon yellow and grapefruit pink.

Hand woven hemp lining also adds to the eco-benefits. Aside from giving these bags a natural, hippie chic feel, the hemp plant is extremely resilient which bars the need for pesticide use.
