Beach House: "Lazuli"
Beach House has not come out with an album since 2010's stellar Teen Dream, but I'm sure none of us have forgotten about them. This week they dropped a new single off of their forthcoming album, Bloom, releasing May 15th on SubPop. "Lazuli" opens up with a reminder of where Beach House came from: a steady, bright synth line that will instantly make itself recognizable. About twenty seconds in, the duo's maturity shows as a wave of thick, dense production envelopes us, comforts us, opens before us into a milky dream-pop serenade.

Big news has dropped today in the festival circuit: New York’s Governor’s Ball has officially announced its 2012 line up. For those not familiar with the Ball, it’s a two day fest featuring diverse tunes, a myriad of activities, and all the usual shenanigans that accompany any outdoor music festival. Situated on Randall’s Island—stock prison backdrop included—this fest boasts headliners Beck, Modest Mouse, Chromeo, Ducksauce, and Passion Pit (to name a few). Interspersed throughout the two days, the line-up looks fiendishly delicious, with June 23 & 24 shaping up to be quite the weekend.
Back in 2008, the world was gifted with Santogold, the debut album from Santigold. The record was a fresh and creative fusion of hip-hop, African beats and punk rock. At the time the tracks were everywhere: video games - NHL 08, FIFA 08, NBA 2k9, commercials - Ford Flex, Zune-Arts, her song "Shove It" was even featured on an episode of Gossip Girl. She toured relentlessly supporting acts of all genres including Jay Z, Kanye West, Coldplay, M.I.A., and Bjork. And no doubt, at any good party you heard at least one Santigold jam spinning. But since her epic uprising, and few collaborations with the likes of the Beastie Boys, David Bryne and Fatboy Slim, and an appearance on the N.A.S.A album, the past couple of years have been relatively quiet for Santigold...until now.
You can add Amanda Blank to the list of badass chicks I'm obsessed with.
It's no secret that I'm big fan of girl power in the music industry, so it's unfortunate that when I hear the words "white female rapper," my mind immediately thinks the act must be gimmicky. But Blank is no gimmick. This girl is for real. At Santos Party House on Friday night, Blank put all my preconceived notions to shame with her undeniable talent as a rapper. She can spit as good as any of the boys, though I doubt any of her male contemporaries would look as good in a tiger-print teddy and sequined bra.
Amanda Blank is bringing her potty mouth to Santos Party House next Friday, January 29th as part of a show series built by MeanRed.
Amanda Blank stormed onto the scene in the wake of multi-talented female artists like M.I.A. and Santigold. She raps, she sings, and she might bite your head off. Her frank lyrics and intense performance style have made Blank a topic of conversation in indie-pop circles across the globe. Known for her stage appearances alongside Spankrock, Blank was originally a part of the Philadelphia-based pop group Sweetheart. She released I Love You, her solo debut in the summer of 2009. I Love You features the single "Might Like You Better" and tracks produced by Switch, XXXChange and Philly big shot Diplo.
Where else could you catch a live-outdoor performance from Arctic Monkeys, Tool, Jane’s Addiction and The Beastie Boys. Snoop Dogg, Thievery Corporation and TV on the Radio. An all-star lineup like this can only be compiled for a show like Lollapalooza.
As was previously reported on Joonbug.com, critically acclaimed artist Santogold has changed her name to Santigold. “Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your T-shirt airbrushed, and change the name on your year-end list. Santogold is now Santigold,” was mysteriously stated.
But now the initial haze shrouding the name change has cleared up and there’s a strange and unexpected figure standing in the foreground: Enter Santo “Santo Gold” Rigatuso, an infomercial jewelry salesman from Baltimore, Maryland. Rigatuso sued Santigold (as she is now known as a result of this lawsuit) for name infringement, alleging that Santigold was “crushing…his hopes and dreams of continuing his music and acting career.”
Santogold has changed her name, for no apparent reason other than to annoy the people who took the time to spell it correctly.
According to an e-mail from her publicist: "Change the graffiti on the bathroom wall, get your tattoo fixed, get your t-shirt airbrushed and change the name on your year end list — Santogold is now Santigold." Yep. One letter.
Seeing as how her actual name is Santi White, I can’t help but wonder why it’s taken so long for her to point out a typo.
