SPORTS BAR
A classic print of New York Knick great Patrick Ewing scoring over Chicago Bulls legend Michael Jordan hangs elegantly in the entranceway of Warren 77, immediately keying visitors in to two things: one, this sports bar is not your run-of-the-mill ESPN Zone hangout and two, this place is quintessentially New York. Co-owned by Matt Ambramcyck of Smith & Mills and Employee's Only (as well as the dearly departed Beatrice Inn) and New York Ranger man-about-town, Sean Avery, Warren 77 (located on - surprise - 77 Warren Street in TriBeCa) is a small but stylish place to catch the remainder of the Stanley Cup playoffs, the upcoming Wimbledon Championships, and summer games of America's Favorite Pastime.
Opening at 4 pm tonight, walking into the George Street Pub will give you the choice of nearly 50 beers - 16 on tap and 30 bottled - as well as what UrbanDaddy calls "New Orleans-tinged seafood" (like fish and chips, a fried walleye sandwich, and jumbalaya), burgers, and an assortment of fried appetizers. Your taste buds will surely thank you once you mix your meal with the perfect brew, and it's definitely possible with as many choices as there are available. The place isn't huge, but it offers a cozy atmosphere - with high-ish ceilings that help you not feel claustrophobic when the space gets a little crowded. Just in time for baseball season, you can catch the games on one of many televisions or take your food and drink outside to the patio once this brutal winter finally morphs into spring. Cheers!
If you're wondering where the best place to catch the next game is, you may want to check out Leader Bar. With 22 flat-screen TVs throughout and an enormous bar, there's all but a bad seat in the house. The place is decorated with Brazilian Ipe wood throughout and features real elk antlers right above the fireplace. Yes, we said fireplace - spring temperatures may be fickle in the coming weeks, but that's not a worry at Leader. If it's a cold night for the big game, one of 14 beers on tap and that crackling fire are sure to warm you up.
Last night, 1834 Bar & Burger held their grand opening on 62 Pearl Street in the Financial District, the former home of the French bar and restaurant Perle. Boasting four TV screens in the upstairs dining area and 15 monitors in the downstairs lounge, it is absolutely possible to get a glimpse of MLB Spring Training highlights, catch a hockey game, stay updated on March Madness games and brackets, keep tabs on the NBA, and get a little rowdy watching some futbol all at the same time (Isn't March a great month for sports lovers?). While there, choose from a tasty array of burgers on the menu, prepared by celebrity chef Diane Dimeo, a winner of the Food Network's weekly food competition Chopped. Also be sure to take advantage of 1834's truly outrageous March Madness deal of a burger and a beer for only $5 after 5 p.m. until April 1.
Chickie's & Pete's on Roosevelt Boulevard in the Northeast screams "Philadelphia". Not just the warm paneled interior, framed local sports paraphernalia, or the regular radio persona and live broadcasts made from the bar.
Not just the famous spicy crab fries, award-winning muscles, Dungeness crabs swimming in a signature seasoning or the Bon Jovi white lobster pizza.
Over the weekend, nightlife entrepreneur Matt Abramcyk (The Beatrice Inn, Employees Only) opened a sports tavern called Warren 77- located, believe it or not, on 77 Warren Street. Matt’s partner in this venture is none other than NY Rangers winger Sean Avery, who has the distinction of being the first NHL player to be a guest editor at Vogue.* Those wishing to see if Sean’s superior fashion sense is evident in the bar’s décor will have to check the place out for themselves, which shouldn’t be too difficult since Matt Abramcyk has stated that Warren 77 is meant to be neighborhood place, not an über-exclusive hipster den (not Abramcyk’s words) like The Beatrice Inn. Weekend guests included Josh Hartnett and John McEnroe who were just in the neighborhood and decided to stop by. Beers on tap include Guinness, Hoegaarden and Old Speckled Hen. Lunch and brunch menus are coming soon.
* A fact which presumably makes talking-trash rather easy for Mr. Avery’s opponents in the rink. “Hey Seany. I love it when you do your little thing on the catwalk . . .”
