FIRST COURSE Unreal Candy Bars
"Un-junking' the World One Candy Bar at a Time

Can a candy that contains no corn syrup or hydrogenated oils, less sugar and added nutrition be considered junk food? The new-driven food company called Unreal Brand seems to think so. Their mission; to unjunk the world.

Entrepreneur Michael Bronner and his 15-year-old-son created Unreal candy bars to prove to America that junk food doesn't need to be full of junk. That there is a way to unjunk America's junk food and still make it taste great, find it at the usual places, and not have to pay more for it.

Sugar Prohibition: America's Fight Against Added Sugars

On the April 1st episode of CBS’ 60 Minutes, Dr. Sanjay Gupta went on air to report the findings of Dr. Robert Lutsig, a California pediatric endocrinologist and anti-sugar campaigner. Dr. Lutsig and other researchers have found in their studies that sugar is to blame for essentially every health problem currently inflicted upon American citizens. Our current health crisis, along with the rise of those suffering from heart disease, diabetes, obesity, and even certain cancers may be caused by the amount of processed, overly refined sugars found in the American diet.

Muah!

We absolutely love the look of red lipstick, but we do not love the stress that comes with wearing it! Constantly worrying about our lipstick smearing all over our face while we're trying to enjoy our nights out is just no fun! So you can image how excited we were when Nylon told us about a lip balm that goes on (and stays on!) with the ease of chapstick, but leaves your lips with a beautiful red sheen!

This genius innovation, called Red Passion, was created by Sugar, the makers of some of our other favorite lip tints like "Plum". Available now at Sephora, we know this will be a huge hit for fall!

How to Make Limoncello

Cleanse the pallet with this lemon liqueur.

Smooth but untamed, limoncello's perfection is in it's balance between liquor and lemon. Too strong and it suddenly becomes a labor to drink; too weak and you might as well be drinking lemonade. All you need is five simple ingredients, lots of lemons, two months and a good deal of patience.

18 lemons
Sugar (4 cups)

FIRST COURSE Apple Picking
Pick the Best of Fall's Apple Harvest

Hope you got your fair share of summer's juiciest tomatoes, because they're all down hill from here, folks. The cool breeze brought us something new to mount on our fruit stand, “It's apple picking season!”

The nostalgic pleasure of laborious apple picking is far, far from the mind when the summer comes to a close. Nonetheless, the sentiment is true, there is nothing like tasting a fruit in its ideal state. So, the apple has come to take its seat on the “Septober” pedestal and on the list of DC things-to-do for the fall.

If you must take the bucolic route, do it the right way and go crawl around on the historic, apple-strewn grounds of Stribling Orchard in Markham, VA. Not only do they sport a fantastic selection of locally made products, pies, and cider, they are also located within a 3-mile drive of Naked Mountain Winery. Take your freshly picked harvest over to the winery for a harmonious trifecta of apples, wine, and cheese.

FIRST COURSE Comstock Saloon
Best Cocktail Bars in San Francisco

Props to you, San Francisco. In the latest copy of GQ, four hometown bars have made it into the Top 25 Best Cocktail Bars in America. Here are the places you should hit after work as voted by GQ.

In the number five spot is The Alembic. The employees are tattooed and the drinks are strong. The favorite was the Vasco da Gama, a drink served on the rocks with Buffalo Trace bourbon, masala-spiced apple syrup and Islay scotch. Not a whiskey/bourbon/scotch sort of person than gin it is. The Gilded Lily is a sparkling Chartreuse-and-gin cocktail because it is topped with edible gold dust.
