Not just for nerds, techies, friend stalkers, or angel investors! For the past 8 years, Internet week has hosted a series of networking events, meet ups, and conferences sure to appeal even the layman of web users.

Starting this Monday, May 14th, through May 21st, be apart of the “ever-changing digital landscape.” The festival, like the Internet itself, is open to everyone. Check out the schedule and map out the things that interest you!

In nearly every state without a huge transit system like New York, almost everyone drives. It’s impossible to get around without a car. One of the big rites of passage is getting a license. Driving, however, isn’t for everyone. Think about it too hard and the responsibility of driving a giant machine that can move faster than a lot of land animals and has blind spots becomes a little daunting. The realization that the cute cardboard kids and people on a driving course stand in for real ones can settle in hard enough to make someone panic. Besides, it’s the future. Our computers have gotten tiny, and our cell phones have become computers. If we don’t have the flying car yet, what do we have?

Gizmodo Gallery 2011

Art galleries are great, but they can hardly be called very exciting unless what they feature has a short life span. For technology lovers, exhibits are more like car shows or conventions. Imagine, however, if things were a little more festive. The Gizmodo Gallery, a week long event featuring all sorts cool technology is part gallery, part carnival, and part surprise takeover, and it’s back for more in New York City.

Back in 2009, Gizmodo, known for its tech, gaming, and internet culture coverage, took over a storefront in SoHo. They transformed it into a gallery for some of the coolest and weirdest inventions. An automatic pancake maker graced the floor, feeding its visitors. A plasma screen hosted a mini video game tournament for those done browsing the floor. Gadgets from long ago graced the walls along with its modern counterparts. Anyone dropping by could add a LEGO creation to a growing landscape on the LEGO wall.

With recent news that NASA gets less funding than the U.S. military gets for air conditioning, it comes as no surprise that SETI’s Allen Telescope Array lost its funding in April. Known as the largest and longest-running search for extra-terrestrial intelligence, the Allen Telescope Array was used for much more. Its research attempted to piece together pieces of our own history through the exploration of outer space.

Social Media Week Fall 2011

Social Media Week is coming soon and the event has opened its doors to hopeful applicants.The largest twice annual social media and technology event around the world started accepting newcomers June 15 and will continue to accept applicants until July 15. Some of the biggest names in technology, social media (television, internet, and printed word), and creative and fun businesses on the web are already submitting their request to join the thousand featured over the 5-day event coming our way in September.

50 Failed Pieces of Technology

Complex has a collection of the top 50 failed pieces of technology on their blog today. Many are old familiars that could not keep up with the times, but a lot are pieces of tech that didn’t see the light of day to most of us. Strange devices, oddball inventions, and items that suffered from coming in second all make the list.

Most will be surprised to find at least one item they own and love makes the list as a failed piece of technology. Windows Vista and Nintendo’s DSi XL are among the first readers will see upon browsing the list. While they don’t rank high on the list of bad ideas, it’s surprising to see that they are considered a failure. Vista’s bugs and the XL’s size, however, resulted in their downfall, and they’re among the losing here.
