Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week in New York City has become one of the top photo ops of the year for style bloggers, not to mention an important badge of merit and success. In the past, a ticket to a designer’s show represented acceptance and influence within the fashion industry for a blogger. Now, however, it appears that many of these personal-brand empires, big and small, are going to have to find a new way to participate in Fashion Week as IMG, the company ultimately responsible for Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, has decided to discontinue inviting many of the bloggers that have become recent fixtures at Lincoln Center.

Caroline Misan Alvo is the CEO and founder of Gambita (meaning “little shrimp” in Spanish), a startup eCommerce company whose goal is to deliver a positive online shopping experience for petite women by compiling and selling the best petite and petite-friendly clothing to petite women all over the world. She recently held a modeling competition in NYC to find “the face of Gambita.” Originally, she thought she would be able to select a model from one of the many NYC modeling agencies, but after calling numerous agencies and being told that “models under 5’4’’ do not exist,” she decided she would host her own runway show in order to find a model to represent the company. The only requirement for the competition was that every woman be 5’4” or under.

There has been a long battle to save the iconic-historical landmark of Queens, and graffiti mecca, Five Pointz. This has been an intricate piece of Queens history for years now, and whether you're a fan of the building or not, you have heard the landmark. Owner Jerry Wolkoff has allowed street artists to create walls of art on this former warehouse since 1993. Last week, a federal judge denied the stop of the demolition of the space. This morning, it happened, and no, it wasn’t Banksy’s doing – the buffing of 5ptz, an action that no one thought would happen so soon, happened. The graffiti art landmark- seen from the Queens-Manhattan 7 Line, is closing. The space has been painted-over and demolition will begin soon following the building of new condos. Street art fans were furious to hear the news as a decade of work has been tarnished. Five Pointz attributed to the coming together of the five New York boroughs: Queens, Brooklyn, The Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island, but the space is a global topic. Today a part of New York's culture and history is being defaced. True street art lovers, artists and followers can say that the demolotion of Five Pointz is their defintion of vandalizm, a deliberate destruction of or damge to public or private property. The Nitty Gritty New York City has lost this artistic spot - but we can only hope that something of the same nature evolves from this sad day.
Ashley Olsen has joined the board of the Council of Fashion Designers of America. The CFDA is an invitation-only VIP membership that consists of 400 American designers. The CFDA is a not-for-profit organization found in 1962 by publicist Eleanor Lambert. However, for the last 4 years, Diane von Fürstenberg has been the group’s President. Their mission branches out in many positive directions. First and foremost, they want the point of fashion design to be seen as American art and culture, but they also focus on maintaining a code of ethics in professional, public and trade relations. The fashion industry in America is meant to grow and expand – and with creating partnerships and collaborations this becomes possible.
