After taking a one-year hiatus, POPPED! Music Festival returns this September as a revamped two-day event. The festival is a unique occasion to Philadelphia, celebrating the city’s rich musical history.
Taking place across three stages, the festival will include live music, a DJ tent, a comedy tent, and a food bazaar. Set to headline on Friday are The Shins and Cage the Elephant, and Pretty Lights and Girl Talk on Saturday. In addition to the headlining bands, the festival will host other epic acts including Rakim, Cults, and Kreayshawn.
In addition to staging an eclectic assortment of music acts, POPPED! also aims to bring awareness to Philadelphia’s green efforts via recycling programs, local fair, partnerships with local business, and the use of public transportation and energy saving.
The Outside Lands Music and Arts Festival gives 40,000-60,000 ear-eager music fans a yearly opportunity to experience both music and art in one place. Atop the scattered stages you can find an abnormal yet effective line-up of musical artistry. Seeing a neighborhood cafe act lead into Erykah Badu was normal. The purgatory that lies between mega stardom and small-town-nobody is suddenly erased. Nor are any rules of artist seniority enforced. Divas mix amongst us normal folk, all egos aside, in the attempt to give awaiting fans what they're spending the weekend in San Francisco for: pure, raw musical talent. It didn't matter how many albums the artist sold --it only mattered if they were good. And to my surprise there weren't any "not so good acts" at this year's festival, which was held at the Golden Gate Park in San Francisco.

It has been a little over two years since indie-pop, folk rockers, The Shins, have graced a stage with their presence. But lately, the stars must have aligned somewhere, because the band has been testing out new material at various smaller venues along the west coast.
Not everyone is familiar with The Shins humble beginnings as Flake Music, in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Equally as unknown, is that it was Modest Mouse that saw the massive potential of the group early on and took them under their wing on a national tour. Then came Zach Braff and his romantic journey into the heart of New Jersey, with Garden State. Two tracks off of The Shins first LP, Oh, Inverted World - "New Slang" and "Caring is Creepy" - release in 2001, were featured as pinnacle moments in the film. With the help of this plug, The Shins reached international acclaim and success. Their third album, Wincing the Night Away (Sub Pop, 2007) sold 118,000 copies its first week - a record high for the relatively small label. After supporting this junior record for nearly two years and hundreds of shows later, the group took a hiatus in which frontman/songwriter, James Mercer, collaborated with Danger Mouse (Brian Burton), and formed the indie, dance-pop duo, Broken Bells.
Both bands will perform in few days at Irving Plaza.
Broken Bells is a duet with James Mercer from The Shins and Danger Mouse (from many projects such as Gnarls Barkley). Their website is pretty fun.
The Morning Benders is an indie band from Berkeley, California.
You still can find some tickets here.
What was once a mere rumor on Joonbug’s Frequency blog (The Beauty of Broken Bells) has finally been given an official release date. The self-titled album by the duo of James Mercer of the Shins and Danger Mouse (a.k.a. Brian Burton), collectively known as Broken Bells, will be released on March 9, 2010, courtesy of Columbia records. As promised, both musicians have taken on the task of personally handling all the instrumentation associated with the album production, save for a full string orchestration on one of the selected tracks.
This is a big bummer for me, since I love the Shins, and just saw them in concert about two months ago (it was awesome). The reason frontman James Mercer gave for firing keyboardist Marty Crandall and drummer Jesse Sandoval was, “It’s an aesthetic decision.” I call it bullshit.
Since then Crandall and Sandoval have been quiet, but now Sandoval has opened up to the Portland Mercury about the split. “I unequivocally got fired,” he said, “and it kind of confuses me why (Mercer) has a hard time saying that. I understand he’s probably doing it out of respect for me reading interviews. It might be hard for him to say it, but I got fired. There’s no other way of looking at it.”

“The median age has gone up for rock stars. It used to be like you had to be dead at 26.” - Eric Johnson said to ABC News March 2007
Arguably one of the most recognizable bands in the indie rock world, The Shins have helped popularize the soft and soothing sounds of alternative music. Residing in Portland, OR, and Seattle, WA, The Shins began as a side project for singer, song-writer James Mercer in 1997. Originally based in Albuquerque, NM, Marty Crandall, Neal Langford, Jesse Sandoval got their big break after New Slang was released in 2001.
