The Bank Heist Becomes the Prohibition-esque Federal Bar, Opening Thursday

After the loss of North Hollywood's unusual, 1920s-style live-music hotspot The Bank Heist, which burned down in early 2008, founders of famed Knitting Factory Entertainment decided to expand their enterprise by adding a NoHo location in its spot. They rebuilt and revived the Prohibition-era feel of the old place by re-developing the existing two stories under the name The Federal Bar. The lighted sign is up and the chefs are ready - come Thursday evening, the club promises to be serving up gourmet pub food in a restaurant atmosphere downstairs and pouring the finest scotches, bourbons and microbrews from behind the polished wooden bar upstairs.

Kimberly Hotel's New Rooftop Lounge Opens

Have you ever watched a scene in movie when a character takes an elevator up to the top floor and steps out onto a rooftop overlooking a breathtaking Manhattan skyline? I have, and I've always wondered, where exactly are they? Well, now I know: they're in places like this.

Upstairs is a picturesque little lounge perched atop Midtown's Kimberly Hotel. You might be thinking, well, that's nice for the summer, but not now, amidst all this rain. But the people of Upstairs have thought of everything and constructed a retractable roof for such occasions. And, if it's a bit chilly, you can stroll by the fire or seek respite in the closed library nook (with its own bar).

This Isn’t Your Ordinary Living Room

When you imagine a trendy bar opening in NYC, you probably picture rows of top-shelf liquor with names you can’t pronounce (and prices you can’t afford), state-of-the-art lighting, beautiful décor and even more beautiful people. You probably don’t envision a space with furnishings similar to a post-college apartment.

Enter 675 Bar. Located in the Meatpacking district, the former Level V lounge has completely gone left in terms of- well, everything. First and probably most obvious is the interior decoration of the place. Instead of leather couches and glass tables, they opted for cozy retro seating and chairs that resemble someone’s grandmothers’ house in the 70s. There is even a library and foosball table- definitely giving the place a basement hang-out vibe.

Exclusive Cocktail Bar

If secret passageways, swipe keys and very intimate interiors make up your fantasy night out for drinks, this might be for you. I say might because it will be that difficult to get into. Bohemian, the Noho sister of a bar in the Nishiazabu district of Tokyo, is the newest members-only.

To get to the entrance you must make your way through a hallway called, “Basquait Road”. Entrance is only permitted with one of the 200 keys that already were distributed. Sounds almost like a mystery novel. Once you trod through all the b.s. secrecy, you’re welcomed by a very posh apartment-style setting. It’s equipped with a small, yellow-pine bar, 25 plush seats and a couple of couches. The room has white walls and is simplistic in nature. The back bar is graced by tatami mats and there’s a mini Zen garden built into one wall. You can also expect to be awed by a central skylight that shines on the art of “tsukimi sake” (midnight boozin’).
