While ready-to-wear often steals the spotlight, we’d be making a big mistake not to give some special attention to the fresh beauty trends that graced the runway last week. With as much presence as the covetable clothing, New York Fashion Week’s Fall 2012 season brought us an assortment of hair and makeup looks that inspire our beauty routines as much as the collections inspired our wardrobes. From voluminous, airy updos to nail art we’ll be taking to the salon, here are the best and brightest beauty highlights from backstage to the catwalk. (Hint: keep those tweezers at bay—bushy eyebrows aren’t going anywhere!)
Although the moniker "underwear, outerwear, anywhere" might raise a few eyebrows, especially in light of the recent snowstorm here in New York, Victoria Bartlett's VPL Fall 2010 collection continued to bring innerwear to the outside. Challenging conventional notions of what is considered sexy, Bartlett's athletic collection showed a lot more skin than Fall collections typically do. With sequin bandeaus, spandex bodysuits, and prominent neutral and flesh tones to create a barely-there look, Bartlett bridges the gap between underwear and sportswear. In addition to the prevalence of colorblocking and patchwork, the collection also featured a few beautifully draped tops and dresses.
High end jewelry doesn’t always have to be made of precious stones and platinum settings. Designer Elizabeth Fortunato uses reclaimed and ecofriendly materials from around the globe to create one of a kind pieces made of fabrics, beading, buttons, cording, and origami paper to name a few. Her twin sister Kathryn heads the business duties of Lizzie Fortunado Jewels to create a team that produces statement pieces that have taken to the likes of numerous magazines: Nylon, Elle, Teen Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar, Glamour, WWD, and Marie Claire just to name a few. Designs were a feature in this seasons VPL runway show as well.
